We’re waiting! ✈️ After over two years in Cambridge, tonight’s the night that my son is coming home (at least for a few weeks). When we said goodbye to him at the airport back in 2019, we had no idea that a microscopic virus could put such a huge space between us, and for so long. I don’t think I’ve stopped baking and preparing for Christmas (or worrying) since the start of the month - my daughter and I don’t quite remember what it’s like to even hug him, but we can’t wait to swap FaceTime for some real face time ❤️ I know that not everyone will get to spend Christmas with their loved ones, so I send my love to those who may not be as lucky as I am this holiday season. Now, off to make another cake…

They say it takes a whole village to raise a child, but in my experience, it also takes a whole lot of needles to make a baby! One of my patients has kindly shared these pictures with me of her beautiful baby Otis, who was conceived through IVF. It’s stories like these that remind us that life is really a miracle, and that what feels like an insurmountably hard journey will be worth it in the end ❤️ And as if making the baby wasn’t hard enough, she also made (yes, made!) these very cool uterus and CTG cookies 🍪 - a woman of many talents! Made with love and science - maybe that’ll be my new catchphrase… 💉💖

Happy V-Day everyone, and no, I’m not extremely late on Valentine’s Day, I mean vaccination! So pleased to have gone to the COVID-19 Vaccination Hub and received my jab 🤓 ready for round 2, and then my flu vaccination in due course - every virus should be shaking if they come across me 💪 I’d encourage everyone to do the same, when you can, because public health measures work best when everyone does their bit

Happy Friday everyone! But at the North West Operating Theatre, it’s not just Friday - it’s Freddo Friday 😂 🐸 sometimes we all need a pick-me-up by the end of the week, and chocolate snobs think what you will, but most Aussies will agree with me that just hits the spot. Have a great Friday, and enjoy the weekend everyone 😊

It might have taken about a month and a half, but this Christmas cake has had a journey that would make all of us jealous! In December, my daughter and I put together a big care package to send to my son in Cambridge. It had everything: books, Swisse herbal supplements, and the piece de resistance: ‘s chocolate fruit cake.

I make that cake every year and my son loves it served with brandy custard or ice cream, but sadly he wasn’t able to get home for Christmas this year. Naturally, I had to send Christmas to him!

So I baked up a storm and with the generous assistance of it was vacuum-sealed and ready for shipping. Miraculously, it’s survived in absolutely pristine condition and has done more travelling than all of us combined 😂

When the world is upside down, at least we can rely on two things: cakes, and Nigella recipes.

Happy new year everyone, after a Christmas hiatus I’m back! Well, on a short beach holiday at Noosa with my daughter that we so luckily were able to salvage after the lockdown was lifted. Getting some much needed sun, salty water and a glass of rose because I’m not on call 😅 stay safe everyone, I’ll be back next week!

PODCAST RECOMMENDATION / It’s been a tough year on the healthcare system, from temporarily halting fertility treatments and other kinds of surgery, to operating in PPE gear under strict protocols. You might be tired of hearing about it all, but at the same time our healthcare system still looks rather different and particularly for fertility treatments, which can be highly time-sensitive, it’s very interesting and important to know what everything looks like going forward. If you’re curious, has just released a wonderful podcast featuring my brilliant colleague and friend from 🤓 it’s nice and short, so give it a listen!

A big warm welcome to the world baby Marlowe! 🥰 For those who have been following me for a little while, this tiny bub is the very same one that you have been seeing the scans of. She started out as Lenny lentil and was most recently Roxi Rockmelon. All grown up in comparison, but still so tiny! Congratulations to the beautiful family, I was so delighted to share every step of the journey with them and thank you to the parents for sending me all the photo updates. This is definitely a wholesome post to start the week off right 😇

A wonderful Christmas party at .same.restaurant with my staff and colleagues last week to round off what’s been a tumultuous year, to say the least. It was a year ago now that the mysterious coronavirus was popping up in Wuhan, and only 9 or so months ago that we were being told to halt all elective surgery. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my colleagues and especially my spectacular secretary Sharon, who has put up with me through thick and thin. We’re very lucky to be able to go out to a restaurant now and spend some time together, as many countries around the world are still battling with COVID. But with vaccinations already starting next week in the UK hopefully things will be looking up! To all my beautiful patients and your families, happy holidays and enjoy your time together. Don’t think too much about this year, rather let’s focus on the next 🥰

🥞 COMFORT FOOD 🥞 Normally I’d post a veggie-packed meal that looks super healthy and full of nutrients, but sometimes that just doesn’t hit the spot. This was my dinner on Friday night, a Polish favourite: naleśniki! It’s basically a Polish crepe and my favourite way to have them is with a vanilla-flavoured cottage cheese/quark filling and with a bit of jam 🍓 I make the naleśniki, fill them, and then fry them again in a bit of butter so they go all crispy and crunchy 🤤 but the filling was high protein-low fat cottage cheese, so balance, right? 😉

34 weeks and we have the beautiful Roxi Rockmelon! 🍈 A slightly delayed scan photo from my lovely patients who have been sharing these with me since the size of a blueberry 🥰 once again, I am still amazed to see how humans grow from a microscopic embryo, to a rockmelon, to adults (who eventually grow taller than you in my case 😂)
