Duty of care vs dignity of risk, how do we balance safety with allowing autonomy?

In our latest blog, we explore the tension between keeping people safe and giving them the freedom to make choices, even when those choices carry risk.

Because real dignity comes when we trust people with responsibility over their own lives.

Not all barriers are made of bricks and stairs.

Attitudinal barriers, such as assuming someone’s limitations, offering pity instead of respect, or addressing carers rather than the individual, can be just as limiting as physical ones.

True inclusion means breaking down both the visible and invisible walls.

Mondays remind us of something powerful: no matter how last week went, whether it was filled with wins, challenges, or lessons, we always have the strength to begin again.

It’s a fresh page, a new chance to refocus, and an opportunity to move closer to the goals that matter most. Mondays aren’t just the start of a work week; they’re reminders that resilience, consistency, and hope can carry us forward.

So try again this week.

Here’s to making this week better, brighter, and bolder than the last.

Mobility is complex and individual. Some wheelchair users can walk short distances but use chairs for longer trips. Others might stand for transfers or specific activities. Some use chairs for pain management, fatigue, or safety reasons.

There's no "wheelchair user rulebook" that says you must be paralyzed to deserve mobility equipment.

Assumptions like "you don't look disabled enough" or surprise when someone stands up can be harmful and invasive. Everyone's body and needs are different.

It takes strength to say, “I can’t do this alone.” And the truth is, you don’t have to. Support is out there, and you deserve it.

It can be talking to a friend, calling a loved one, or seeking professional help. These steps don’t make you weak. They show your resilience, your bravery, and your will to keep going.

Remember: you are never a burden. You are not alone. Your voice matters, and your life matters.

While both roles involve helping people, their focus differs significantly.

Care workers provide hands-on personal care like bathing, dressing, medication assistance, and daily comfort needs. Support workers focus on building independence like life skills, community engagement, emotional support, and empowerment.

Think of it this way: care workers care for people, support workers support people toward independence.

Understanding the difference helps you choose the right support

Staying on top of your health means more than just managing your disability, it is catching potential issues early and maintaining your overall wellbeing.

Regular check-ups, screenings, vaccinations, and monitoring can help prevent bigger problems down the road. This might include annual physicals, eye and hearing tests, dental care, mental health check-ins, or condition-specific screenings.

Sometimes accessing preventive care can be challenging with mobility, communication, or scheduling needs, but advocating for accessible appointments and bringing support when needed helps ensure you get the care you deserve.
