💜 As National Volunteer Week 2026 comes to a close, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every volunteer who contributes to our communities.

While this week shines a spotlight on volunteering, the impact of our volunteers continues far beyond these seven days.

From community connection and peer support to advocacy, events, programs and practical support initiatives, volunteers help make our work possible every single day.

Thank you to everyone who joined our volunteer morning teas and celebrations throughout the week, and who we're so visible with their stories and connections. It was wonderful to come together, connect and celebrate the people who give so much to our communities 💜

To every volunteer, thank you for your time, care, passion and commitment.

💜 This national volunteer week, we hear from Mara, pronouns they/them, who volunteers for our Wrapped N Ready Safer S*x Pack program, and Gayawur Rainbow in Meanjin Brisbane.

“The biggest feel-good moment is the connections I have made, especially with the Wrapped and Ready volunteers. I have definitely made some great connections with the team and feel part of a community. There have been some locations where I have seen the packs we have created and it makes me feel good knowing that I have contributed to allowing the items being distributed. It has formed a sense of pride within myself knowing I am doing something positive for the community.

I like to go and then do something for myself, whether it is going somewhere for a meal or just chilling in front of the TV binge watching whatever show I am currently into.

My word that sums up why I do what I do is community. Sometimes I feel like I am not connected to community, however, whenever I have completed a volunteer shift, I always feel a sense of community, regardless of whether it is with the Wrapped and Ready Packers or as a Gayawur Rainbow (Meanjin) Connector Volunteer program.”

💜 Thank you, Mara, for the care, passion and dedication you bring to our communities through your volunteering.

“I’m Grateful. I feel so fortunate to be a part of our LGBTQIA+ community and having the privilege to get involved with programs which serve our community.

I used to think of volunteering more as a responsibility to give back to the community. But since I started volunteering, I have come to see it as a uniquely fulfilling and enjoyable part of my ‘me time’ which benefits me just as much as the communities I volunteer for.” 💃🌈🤗

🌈 We’re so grateful for volunteers like Lauren, whose time and commitment help create stronger, safer and more connected communities.

Meet another of our incredible volunteers 💜

We're sharing a story from Cecily, who has been receiving visits from a volunteer visitor for over a year now and how it has made an impact on her life.

“If there was a Nobel Prize for a Volunteer Kym should get it, I’m so lucky, she is just beautiful. Kym has been visiting me as part of our LGBTI Seniors Visiting Service, otherwise known as the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Service (ACVVS) for just over a year and it’s truly been such a beautiful experience.

Kym offers me almost an ‘emotional respite’ and when I was caring for my partner who recently passed, I would welcome the normality of talking about the man who quoted the roof, or the day-to-day life for Kym. The normalcy was ever so soothing for me.

Before Kym became my visitor, I was attending the Older Persons Morning Teas and that’s where I learned of the program, it was exciting to me and I was very interested.

Initially I guess I imagined someone who would be older, maybe my age. Kym is younger than me and she introduces me to a way of q***r people that I am just delighted by. It’s been a pleasant surprise; she has a magic about her. Her warmth in my home is like bathing in a warm pool; I really enjoy the comfortableness to speak with another Q***r woman.

There are two very memorable moments over the last 12 months that come to mind, one where I had some serious personal stuff happen that wasn’t great and the second when my Margaret passed away. I was so glad to have Kym’s support and visits through those times.

The consistency of her visits like they always were something that helped in those times. I was very moved by those experiences. She cared, you know? That matters.

It’s things like nightclubs, I’ve never been to a nightclub, Margaret and I didn’t have those in our days.

We were together 43 years and not one nightclub, Hehe. So I asked Kym and she was able to tell me all about them and what they are. It’s very interesting to learn of these things.

The program has been a huge success for me, and I have enjoyed Kym becoming part of mine and Margaret’s tiny community. As I navigate life after Margaret’s passing, I am glad to have Kym alongside as I adjust slowly.”

Thank you for your generosity, commitment and support for our communities.

Help shape the future of community health 🌟

2Spirits and QC, in partnership with the University of Queensland, are inviting community members to share their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and experiences with mpox and the mpox vaccine. Your voice will help improve health messaging and support across Queensland 💬
If you are 16+, live in Queensland, and identify as a gay or bis*xual man, another man who has s*x with men (cis or trans), a trans woman, or a non-binary person, and have been s*xually active in the last six months, you’re eligible to participate.

The survey only takes 10–15 minutes and is completely anonymous 🔒

It highlights that mpox spreads through close contact, emphasises “Your Voice Matters,” and includes logos for community health organisations and The University of Queensland.

National Volunteer Spotlight 💜

Tom, pronouns He/Him, has volunteered for our Wrapped N Ready Safer S*x Program since 2025. Here, Tom shared some feel-good thoughts about volunteering.

“If my volunteer role had a theme song would be Aretha Franklin, think from the Blues Brothers movie, it makes me feel very motivational and upbeat.

The three emojis that capture the vibe of my work would be red heart, giving me a warm feeling inside that I’ve been able to help make the community better, smile I like to think I’m helping people out in a time of need, and contributing in helping make the community safer, and cool, It gives me a great feeling by the end of the day, and I think it’s cool to volunteer ❤️ 😊 😎

My favourite way to celebrate and relax after a busy day of volunteering is to go back home, put my feet up, listen to a bit of music and enjoy a cold drink.”

Thank you for helping create welcoming, safer and more connected communities.
