What great tips for emotional connection Positive Minds Australia

Helping children navigate their emotions is one of the more challenging responsibilities we have as parents and educators.

Some of us may still struggle regulating our own emotions, let alone someone else’s. Gosh it can be tough.

Taking a gentle moment to empathise with a crying child, (when you can), is never wasted time. It often reduces the intensity of emotions, builds their confidence to cope and teaches them their feelings matter and they are loveable, even in their toughest moments.

Here are some tips on how to respond.

There’s always a reason behind the big feelings. Always.

Children are doing the best they can, with the knowledge and skills they have so far.

Parents and educators, hang in there.

Being the calm in their storm is unbelievably hard and a skill that takes time and patience to develop.

Just start from your heart.

Imagine what might be happening under the surface.

Ask them if they know what’s going on to unsettle them.

Meet them where they’re at.

See if through warm connection, presence and mutual respect, you might find some answers.

And be kind to yourself, along the way.
