This National Volunteer Week (18-24 May), we’re recognising the many residents across our retirement villages who continue to make a meaningful difference through volunteering, community initiatives and social connection. 🌟

At Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village in Townsville, more than 100 residents participated in a community showcase event last week highlighting the wide range of hobbies, volunteer groups and resident-led activities contributing to village life and the broader community.

Among them is the village’s Huggy Teddy group, which has knitted more than 19,000 teddy bears to help comfort children in hospitals, ambulances and women's shelters locally and overseas. 🐻

The event showcased the powerful role volunteering, purpose and connection play in supporting positive ageing and thriving retirement living communities.

During National Palliative Care Week, we’re sharing the moments that matter most.

At 46, Matt, a father of three living on a rural cattle property had a clear wish - to spend his final days at home with his family. But first, he had one more dream: a family cruise to New Caledonia.

With careful planning, coordination, and 24/7 support, BlueCare’s palliative care team helped make it happen - ensuring everything was in place so he could travel safely and focus on time with those he loved.

The family returned home with precious memories. Just six days later, Matt passed away peacefully, surrounded by his partner, children, and parents.

It’s a powerful reminder that palliative care isn’t just about end of life - it’s about helping families live every moment, right to the end.

Today is International Nurses Day - a chance to celebrate the incredible nurses supporting communities across Queensland every day 💙

From our very first home visit in 1953, BlueCare nurses have always been driven by a passion for care. Whether supporting clients at home or caring for residents in our aged care homes, their impact is felt in every corner of our state and have helped us become one of Queensland’s most trusted brands.

Today, our nurses make more than three million visits every year.

We proudly continue to empower our nurses so that they can empower our communities.

Thank you to every nurse across our services, wherever your impact is felt across Queensland.

Today marks the start of National Palliative Care Week - a time to reflect on the powerful difference compassionate care can make.

At 75, Lauren, living with advanced breast cancer, had one wish: to spend her final weeks at home in Cairns, surrounded by family.
After a difficult experience losing their father, her family felt uncertain - but together, they chose to honour her wishes.

With support from BlueCare’s palliative care team, they found confidence and calm. Equipment, daily care, and specialist support were all arranged to keep Lauren comfortable at home.

In a moment that meant everything, the team also helped reunite Lauren with her estranged daughter - bringing peace and connection when it mattered most.

Lauren passed away gently, surrounded by love.

Her family said they felt supported, prepared, and able to focus on what truly mattered - being together.

Today at BlueCare Wondall Gardens Retirement Village, it was all about community, connection and a very special cause. 🍰

Residents, families and friends came together for their annual Biggest Morning Tea event, filling the village community centre with laughter, conversation and plenty of delicious treats, all in support of the Cancer Council Australia.

From market stalls and raffles to shared stories over a cuppa, the day was a beautiful reflection of what can be achieved when a community comes together.

A heartfelt thank you to Marion and Norma, who led the effort with a whole-of-village support in baking, donating, setting up and ensuring it was a special day that residents will remember for years to come.

We look forward to sharing the fundraising total soon. 💙

It is always a pleasure to welcome the girls from Moreton Bay College to Wondall Gardens. This time it was the Year 5 girls visiting for a special afternoon of bingo, sunflower planting and meaningful connection with our residents.

With painted pots, thoughtful notes for their grandfriends, and plenty of laughter shared along the way, the visit was a lovely reminder of how powerful intergenerational relationships can be. Moments like these help build understanding, kindness and connection across generations, while creating memories that stay with everyone involved.

At BlueCare Retirement Living, community engagement is so important to us. Creating opportunities for younger and older generations to come together helps strengthen local ties and foster a real sense of belonging. With Moreton Bay College right next door to Wondall Gardens, it is a wonderful partnership that feels close to home in every sense.

Thank you to the students and teachers from Moreton Bay College for spending this time with our residents. We look forward to many more special moments shared with our grandfriends throughout the year. 🌻💙
