📆This week marks National Diabetes Awareness Week, taking place from July 13th to July 19th. It’s an opportunity to raise awareness about diabetes, with a particular emphasis on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) here at Eve Health.

🤔What is GDM?
Gestational diabetes mellitus is a form of diabetes that only occurs during pregnancy and typically resolves after the baby is born. However, some women may experience elevated blood sugar levels even after childbirth, necessitating additional medical care and support.

🩺How is GDM Diagnosed?
GDM is generally diagnosed by assessing your body’s response to a sugary drink around 26 to 28 weeks of pregnancy through an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).

This test is conducted at a pathology clinic and involves the following steps:
🚱Fasting overnight
💉Blood test to check fasting sugar levels
🥤Consuming a 75g sugary beverage
💉Blood tests are taken one hour after and again at the two-hour mark.

📃Recent Changes to the Diagnosis of GDM
Australia’s leading diabetes organisation’s have recently introduced updated recommendations from the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) regarding the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

These guidelines suggest higher blood glucose thresholds for diagnosis and advocate for more personalised screening for women with known risk factors early in their pregnancy.
