✨STEWED FRUIT✨

Turn those almost overripe fruits into a gut nourishing Superstar🍎🍊🍏

Stewing fruit, especially apples, is not just a great way to clean up the fridge. It’s also fantastic for your gut health.

Pectin is a natural substance, found in apples, and acts as a prebiotic. When stewed, pectin is released from the apple and helps to increase the production of short-chain fatty acids, protecting the mucosal lining of your gut from oxidative stress and the beneficial bacteria colonies living within the lining.

A simple dish that can be a ‘treat’ and a friend to our gut microbiome 🫶🏼

Enjoy stewed fruit mixed into yoghurt, topped on oats, turned into a crumble or straight from the jar 🤭

This is how I prepare it:

🍏 4 medium apples, peeled, cored and cubed
🍑 2 peaches, pitted and cubed
❣️ 2 stalks of rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 1cm pieces
🍊the juice from an orange or lemon
🍯 2-3 tablespoons of honey
🫚ginger or cinnamon is optional if you like spice

Method:
1. In a large saucepan, combining apples, rhubarb, and peaches.
2. Add the juice from an orange or lemon to draw out the pectin and balance the sweetness
3. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the fruit breaks down and the mixture reaches a thick saucy consistency. This should take about 15 to 20 minutes.
4. Once the fruit is soft and stewed, removed from the heat and let it cool.
5. Stir in the honey to taste before storing in an airtight container to use throughout the week.

Let me know if you try this recipe!

Sending you wellness & warmth,
Ellie

✨INTENTION✨

Setting intentions isn’t just about hoping for an outcome. It’s about actively aligning your thoughts and actions with your deepest values and goals.

Bring intention into your consciousness by starting each day with a clear statement of what you wish to achieve and how you want to feel. This practice transforms intention from a passive to an active state, guiding your daily interactions and decisions towards meaningful outcomes. This is how to make everyday purposeful✨

🫃Bloating? Gassy? or Constipated?

Here are 3 strategies for optimising gut health!

✨Hydration & Electrolytes ✨
Water is essential for proper GIT function, drink your water, eat your water, just make sure you are consuming a minimum of 2L per day. A totally underestimated tool for those with GIT symptoms.. “but if I drink more I urinate more” …Well then you may need electrolytes to help maintain hydration levels within your body. The intestinal mucous lining is composed of approx. 95% water and houses beneficial bacteria that helps to regulate gut function. No bacteria friends = no good poops

✨Prebiotics & SCFAs✨
Prebiotic foods (fibre) are a food source for the bacteria in your gut, without sufficient fibre the beneficial bacteria populations may be disturbed creating dysbiosis (imbalance) in the gut. The breakdown of prebiotics by bacteria produces short chain fatty-acids. We can use Functional Testing to identify if you are producing enough SCFAs. Why? Well, SCFAs are anti inflammatory, immune regulating, anti-obesity, anti-diabetes and anticancer (in the right balance). Low levels of SCFAs are associated with constipation.

✨Probiotics✨
Probiotics aren’t only little pill packages you find in bottles at chemist warehouse*. There are probiotic foods that can help maintain healthy bacteria populations within your body - yoghurt, cheese, tofu, miso, kimchi, sourdough, kombucha and pickles 🤤. You don’t have to go HAM… just incorporate a little everyday.

*Sometimes we need a little extra help from little pill packages but there are so many different strains of bacteria for specific conditions. I like to think of probiotics as soldiers who go in to help with the war, once they’ve done their job the pack up and leave. But you wanna send in the right soldiers.
