๐Ÿ’งFun Fact Friday: Cattle drink between 45 - 60 litres of water per day.

Even as temperatures cool down, cattle still need reliable access to good quality water.

But availability alone is not enough โ€” when water quality is poor, cattle drink less, leading to reduced feed intake and performance.

Testing your water is a simple way to understand what your cattle are actually drinking and identify issues like high salt levels, sulphates or blue-green algae before they impact production.

What could the next wave of northern beef R&D look like?

NABRC have released their 2026-2028 Producer Identified RD&A Priorities, calling for investment in 18 key areas, from non-invasive pregnancy and disease detection, long-acting buffalo fly and tick control to land management strategies and understanding poor adoption rates.

Access the full document below ๐Ÿ‘‡

These priorities guide investment and planning across the sector and ensure RD&A activities remain connected to the practical needs of producers and beef industry participants across northern Australia.

What does reducing emissions actually look like on a beef property?

Twenty South East Queensland beef producers recently got a firsthand look on a two-day bus tour through the Burnett Mary region. Hosted by Healthy Land & Water and the Department of Primary Industries (QLD), attendees visited active carbon projects, silvopastoral trials and saw some of the latest methane reduction research in action.

From Zeebra Plains to Brian Pastures, they explored practical strategies including methane-reducing rumen boluses, low-methane pasture species, leucaena renovations and pasture improvement trials designed to increase both productivity and environmental outcomes.

One of the biggest takeaways? You donโ€™t need a soil carbon project or tree planting to make a difference โ€” improving herd efficiency and establishing legumes can both reduce emissions intensity while boosting business performance.

Producers and collaborators recently checked out one of the newly planted stylo demonstration sites near Millmerran. The paddocks are dry after a summer of low rainfall, but despite that, the pasture legumes growing in the demo are looking impressive!

Pasture legumes are a game-changer for improving pasture productivity and boosting stock liveweight gains, making them a valuable resource for producers.

Five new stylo varieties are being released very soon, and this demo site is one of six sown in the cooler climate of southern Queensland. The new stylos are being compared to existing stylo favourites โ€˜Secaโ€™ and โ€˜Siranโ€™ shrubby stylo, and โ€˜Primarโ€™ and โ€˜Unicaโ€™ Caatinga stylo.

The group form the Producer Advisory Committee who provide guidance and networking for the South Qld Pasture Resilience Program.
