Be ready for the unexpected — learn how to communicate clearly when a crisis hits your farm or community at one of these workshops 👇👇

📽️ QFF, in partnership with Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers, CANEGROWERS and Cotton Australia, is delivering crisis communications workshops to help farmers and industry representatives build confidence responding to media and stakeholders during challenging situations.

Delivered by speciality agricultural communications agency Blue Hill, the workshops will support participants to develop skills for communicating and engaging with the public on sensitive topics including, farm accidents, biosecurity outbreaks, natural disasters, activist trespass and more. To date, more than 50 participants have attended facilitated workshops.

The training features practical activities, such as mock radio and TV interviews, along with discussions, to help support participants to be on the front foot and ready to communicate with confidence should a crisis occur on their farm or in their community.

W**d Wednesday Reveal: Rubber Vine!

If you guessed rubber vine (Cryptostegia grandiflora), give yourself a pat on the back.

🚨 Why it’s a problem:
• Smothers pastures and native vegetation
• Invades waterways and restricts access
• Poisonous to livestock
• Major impact on productivity and mustering

How to manage it:

💡 Early detection is critical
Stopping small outbreaks early is far more effective than tackling dense infestations later.

🔥 Use an integrated approach
No single method works on its own, best results come from combining:
• Fire (to reduce biomass and improve access)
• Herbicide control
• Mechanical removal where practical

🧪 Herbicide control
• Basal bark, cut stump, foliar or aerial application can all be effective
• Treat actively growing plants for best results
• Check out this fact sheet for herbicide recommendations: http://bit.ly/48b7wAZ

🌱 Biological control can help
• Rubber vine rust (Maravalia cryptostegiae) can reduce vigour and seed production
• Works best as part of a broader management strategy

🔁 Follow-up is non-negotiable
• Seeds spread easily by wind and water
• Long-term control requires ongoing monitoring and repeated treatment

It's W**d ID Wednesday! 🕵🏼

This one might have a pretty flower, but don’t be fooled...

👉 A fast-growing vine or shrub found in QLD & WA
👉 Glossy dark green leaves in opposite pairs
👉 Trumpet-shaped flowers with 5 white to light-purple petals
👉 Produces long seed pods packed with fluffy seeds
👉 Pods exude a white, milky sap when broken or cut
👉 Can grow up to 30m when climbing trees or 2m as a shrub
👉 Is poisonous to livestock.

This plant is known for smothering everything in its path particularly in riparian zones, making life harder for both pastures and livestock.

👇 Drop your guesses in the comments, what do you think it is?

Chasing bigger, heavier cattle might not be all upside… new research from Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation suggests there could be some hidden trade-offs when it comes to fertility.

The study found certain genes linked to increased size can also delay puberty, while on the flip side, cattle that reach puberty earlier may come at the cost of height.

It’s a reminder that breeding decisions are rarely one-dimensional. Bigger isn’t always better if it’s costing you calves on the ground.

The good news? These insights are already starting to feed into genomic tools, helping you strike a better balance between performance and fertility.

Katherine graziers, if you think you've left it too late to register? Not quite…

If you’re around Katherine NT, there’s still time to sign up for the Nutrition EDGE workshop and trust us, your future dry-season self will thank you.

With nutrition expert Desiree Jackson leading the charge, you’ll get the practical know-how to make smarter feeding decisions when it matters most.

We’re talking:
✔️ Making the most of what feed you’ve got
✔️ Supplementation that stacks up
✔️ Setting your herd up before conditions tighten

Because “winging it” through the dry? That’s an expensive strategy.
