Branding time is here for the north - a good time to think about pain relief for calves.

If you’re branding, earmarking, castrating, dehorning, disbudding or spaying, using a combination of a local anaesthetic (for sharp pain) and a long-acting NSAID (for ongoing comfort) can help calves recover quicker, settle sooner and stay on their mums, all helping reduce setbacks and potential calf loss.

Worth a quick read before you hit the yards: https://info.futurebeef.com.au/4oGDQRC

Small changes can have a big impact on calf welfare and performance.

When the paddock starts asking tough questions, it’s time to get the crew together.

Ted Callanan and Vanessa Macdonald from the Southern Queensland Sown Pastures Team recently hit the road out west, hosting field days around Augathella and Tambo as pasture dieback shows up in lower-rainfall country.

Producers came together to swap notes, compare scars, and back each other because no one should be tackling dieback on their own. The focus? Practical management options to keep grass and productivity going, with plenty of discussion around dieback-tolerant grasses and legumes to help future-proof paddocks showing signs of rundown.

🌱 W**d ID Reveal - Rattlepod (Trefoil rattlepod - Crotalaria medicaginea)

While it looks fairly harmless in the paddock, rattlepod is highly toxic to horses, even in small amounts. It can also pose a risk to other livestock if consumed in sufficient quantities.

📍 Where it shows up:
Rattlepod is commonly seen in Mitchell grass country and tends to establish where perennial grasses are thin, often following drought or flooding.

⚠️ Why it’s a concern:
• Contains toxins that can cause serious, irreversible liver damage in horses
• Risk increases when feed is scarce and stock are forced to graze less desirable plants

🔧 Management & control:
• Early identification is critical - remove horses immediately
• Maintain strong, competitive pastures to reduce establishment
• Monitor high-risk areas and consider targeted control as part of a broader pasture management plan
• If unsure, seek advice from your local extension officer

What’s this plant?

We’re seeing this yellow-flowering w**d popping up in paddocks across parts of Queensland, but do you know what it is?

Clue: when the seed pods dry out… they rattle.

👇 Drop your guess in the comments and tag a mate who loves a good plant ID challenge.

⚠️ This season has all the makings of a bad pasture dieback summer.

A good start, warm conditions and plenty of growth can be great but they’re also the perfect setup for pasture dieback to show up and spread.

If you’re seeing patches thinning out, plants yellowing, or paddocks not bouncing back like they should, don’t ignore it. The earlier dieback is identified, the more options you have.

📱 The Pasture Dieback App is the quickest way to:
- Report suspected dieback
- Flag new or emerging areas
- Access the latest info, tools and support
- Help build a clearer picture of what’s happening across QLD

We’re especially keen to hear from producers in western and north-western Queensland, where new areas are still being identified.
