๐Ÿšจ Gamba Grass Alert in the Kimberley

Recent surveillance near Kununurra has uncovered immature gamba grass along several roadsides.

If left unchecked, gamba grass can:
๐Ÿ”ธOutcompete native grasses and choke pastures
๐Ÿ”ธReach over 4 metres tall and form dense patches that burn hot and intense
๐Ÿ”ธElevate fire risk, threatening flora, fauna, livestock, and people

๐Ÿ” What to look for:
๐Ÿ”ธStrappy leaves up to 60 cm long
๐Ÿ”ธA distinct white midrib down the leaf blade
๐Ÿ”ธFluffy flower heads on tall stems (Aprilโ€“June)
๐Ÿ”ธGreen into the dry season when most natives are brown

What you can do right now:
๐Ÿ”ธReport sightings immediately via DPIRDโ€™s MyPestGuide Reporter app
๐Ÿ”ธContact the Pest and Disease Information Service on 08 9380 3080 or padis@dpird.wa.gov.au
๐Ÿ”ธDonโ€™t ignore odd grass patches, early removal is far more effective

The recent detections were removed, but we canโ€™t let gamba sneak back in. With everyoneโ€™s eyes on the ground, we can protect our pastures, native species, and communities.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Share this post, more eyes = better chance of spotting the next patch.

Funding opportunity from Southern Queensland Landscapes ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) is one of the worldโ€™s largest underground water sources โ€“ and the only reliable supply of fresh water across much of inland Australia. Around 65% of the Basin lies in Queensland, supporting more than 80 communities and countless farming enterprises.

Through recent cap and pipe projects, thousands of megalitres of water have already been saved each year, improving water efficiency, protecting natural springs, and securing supplies for graziers and regional communities.

Now, eligible landholders can apply for funding of up to 90% of project costs through the Queensland Governmentโ€™s Great Artesian Basin Rehabilitation Program.

Expressions of Interest close 5.00pm, Friday 31 October 2025.

This is a rare opportunity to protect a vital resource for generations to come.

Time to get ready ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

Queensland primary producers โ€“ now is the time to 'get ready'. ๐Ÿ’ช

Severe weather is a familiar challenge here in the Sunshine State, and we know many of our primary producers are still recovering after devastating floods and cyclones earlier this year. ๐Ÿ’™

Weโ€™re encouraging you to prepare ahead of the natural disaster season to protect your farms and minimise damage to crops and livestock.

If youโ€™re an affected producer:

๐Ÿ“ž Contact your local Industry Recovery and Resilience Officer, who can offer tailored support to build resilience to natural disasters, develop recovery and business resilience plans, access to recovery loans, grants and mental health support.

๐Ÿ“ Have an emergency plan in place in the event of a flood, bushfire or cyclone. Check out Get Ready Queensland's Livestock Severe Weather Plan.

๐Ÿ“‚ Bookmark the Disaster Impact Survey alongside emergency numbers such as your local council, vet and animal welfare agencies.

๐Ÿ‘ Ensure livestock have access to higher ground or can be moved to safer areas with adequate food and water and can be identified if they become displaced.

โšก Arrange and maintain back-up power generation for cool rooms, pumps and general electricity.

๐Ÿ’ง Keep extra fodder and water on hand for emergencies.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photograph assets in their current condition, as this can be helpful for any insurance claims and applications for assistance.

๐ŸŒฑ Stylo's on trial in Central Queensland!

This stylo plot at Orion, QLD is 1 of 5 sites across the CQ region where the Pasture Resilience Program team is testing new stylo varieties under different soil and climate conditions.

Planted in Feb 2025, these legumes have just faced their first CQ winter. Over the coming months, the CQ Pastures team will be out monitoring survival and performance to see which varieties are tough enough to handle the conditions.

๐Ÿ’ฅThe results will help producers make more confident choices about legumes that boost pasture productivity and resilience.

๐ŸŒฑLegume management in Top End farming and grazing systems

The newly released NT Pasture Legume Booklet, written by Fergal O'Gara and Rowena Eastick (Territory NRM), is packed with practical information to help producers make smart legume choices.

Here are some key takeaways:
โœ… Pasture legumes fix nitrogen, improving soil fertility & reducing fertiliser needs.
โœ… They lift pasture quality, boosting weight gain & herd performance.
โœ… The right species choice depends on rainfall, soil type & grazing pressure.
โœ… Most popular legumes in the Top End are various Stylos, Bundy, Cavalcade, Wynn cassia, Butterfly pea, Cowpea, lablab & Desmanthus.
โœ… Establishment is critical - good seedbed prep, correct inoculation & w**d control make or break success.

This booklet pulls together research, trial results & producer experience across the Territory. Itโ€™s a must-read for cattle producers looking to improve productivity while supporting long-term land health.

๐ŸŒŸ Pilbara Innovation Partnership: Enhancing the North ๐ŸŒŸ

Profitable beef production that values the land, people, and environment, thatโ€™s the shared vision behind the new collaboration between Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Meat & Livestock Australia and Rio Tinto.

The Pilbara Innovation Partnership (PIP) is about more than boosting the beef industry. Itโ€™s about strategic investments that support the regionโ€™s economy, communities, and environment for the long term.

PIP draws attention to sustainable land and water use, innovation with purpose, driving productivity and people capability, leading into the Pilbara Extension network (PEN).

PEN is an 18-month pilot, supporting seven Pilbara pastoral stations to deliver innovative, station-led projects. Each project is backed with $60,000 in funding and focuses on real solutions, like grazing systems, genetics, land regeneration, early weaning, and workforce development.

With support from the Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemenโ€™s Association, these projects are designed to lift business performance, build skills, and deliver lasting industry benefits.

PEN is paving the way for an exciting future for Pilbara pastoralists!
