Everyday activities like staying focused, following instructions, or navigating social situations can sometimes feel overwhelming. If they're feeling impossible today, you're not alone.
Here are practical strategies that can work for both kids and adults.
💙 When environments feel overwhelming:
- Create a sensory toolkit - noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, or textured items that help you feel calm
- Take regular breaks in quieter spaces when you need them
- Adjust lighting when possible - sit away from fluorescent lights or near windows for natural light
- Use deep breathing or gentle movement to help reset when feeling overstimulated
📝 For planning and organisation:
- Break big tasks into smaller, manageable steps
- Use visual schedules or checklists to track daily routines
- Set phone reminders for important tasks or appointments
- Keep important items in the same place so you can find them easily
- Practice flexible thinking by having a "Plan B" ready for when things change
💬 Building confidence in social situations:
- Practice turn-taking by waiting for natural pauses before speaking
- Use "I feel" statements to express emotions clearly
- Start conversations with open-ended questions about shared interests
- It's okay to ask someone to clarify if you're unsure what they mean
