Everyday activities like staying focused, following instructions, or navigating social situations can sometimes feel overwhelming. If they're feeling impossible today, you're not alone.

Here are practical strategies that can work for both kids and adults.

💙 When environments feel overwhelming:
- Create a sensory toolkit - noise-cancelling headphones, fidget tools, or textured items that help you feel calm
- Take regular breaks in quieter spaces when you need them
- Adjust lighting when possible - sit away from fluorescent lights or near windows for natural light
- Use deep breathing or gentle movement to help reset when feeling overstimulated

📝 For planning and organisation:
- Break big tasks into smaller, manageable steps
- Use visual schedules or checklists to track daily routines
- Set phone reminders for important tasks or appointments
- Keep important items in the same place so you can find them easily
- Practice flexible thinking by having a "Plan B" ready for when things change

💬 Building confidence in social situations:
- Practice turn-taking by waiting for natural pauses before speaking
- Use "I feel" statements to express emotions clearly
- Start conversations with open-ended questions about shared interests
- It's okay to ask someone to clarify if you're unsure what they mean

Need additional support developing these skills? Occupational therapists can work with NDIS participants to build on these strategies in a personalised way. Reach out to our friendly admin team to find out if we have availability in your area:

Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all. And it doesn’t always start with spoken words.

One of our speech therapists is supporting a 26-year-old autistic client with an intellectual disability who’s working on expanding their vocabulary and finding new ways to connect with others.

For this client, the focus isn’t just on how they communicate, but giving them the choice and control to express themselves in a way that works for them.

They’ve recently started using assistive communication technology (a communication device with speech generating software) and their speech therapist is embedding this in everyday activities and routines to build functional language in real time. Examples of these include making choices, asking for help, or inviting someone to join in a game.

Progress looks different for everyone, but every time this client makes their intention clear using their device, it’s progress towards greater confidence, independence, and connection.

✨ Our therapists work closely with clients and their families to create tailored care plans that help them to reach their goals.

In aged care, recognising the early signs of physical or functional decline can make a big difference.

When seniors begin to show signs like reduced balance, slower movement, or difficulty with daily tasks, getting a physiotherapist involved early can help prevent complications and maintain independence.

This kind of early support can reduce falls, ease pain, and help seniors continue doing the things they love, safely and confidently at home.

Here are 3 x tips from our aged care physios to help with balance, movement, and mobility:
✔️ Prioritise gentle movement every day
✔️ Balance can be trained at any age
✔️ Use walking aids correctly

Our therapists work closely with clients and their families to create tailored care plans that support movement, reduce fall risks, and build confidence at home.

Incorporating First Nations culture into therapy is about learning and connecting.

One of our amazing Mental Health Occupational Therapists, shared recently how simply asking clients if they feel connected to Country and their culture can spark powerful conversations.

In her experience, one client expressed interest in exploring their culture further and attending community events with a friend. While another client preferred not to engage, but the conversation still opened pathways for respectful connection.

Our MHOT also shared a reflection from her previous experience working with teens, where she discussed how learning can be seen through an Indigenous lens not just as something stored in your head. It’s something that’s carried in the people, items, and environment around you.

Conversations like these lay the groundwork for culturally safe, respectful, and person-led support 💙

“I’m Aboriginal, you know?!” 🖤💛❤️

That’s the spark we see when therapy celebrates culture.

One of our speechies shared how reading Indigenous children’s books in sessions opens up opportunities for genuine and authentic conversation. Her clients resonate with the books that share stories about Dreamtime, Mob, Country, and Language.

📚 Some favourites in her collection:

Tiddalik the Frog – Anne Faundez
Sorry Day – Coral Vass & Dub Leffler
Big Rain Coming – Katrina Germein
A Home for Bilby – Joanne Crawford
What’s That There? – Ros Moriarty
Ernie Dances to the Didgeridoo – Alison Lester
Birrarung Wilam – exploring place and language

These storybooks affirm and offer moments for identity building. They’re a yarn that says, “I see you.”

This NAIDOC Week we continue to support and nurture the next generation by sharing stories of strength, vision, and legacy.
