It is estimated that approximately 97 million people in the world may benefit from AAC (Beukelman and Light, 2020). So, what is AAC?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is when a person uses something other than (or in addition to) speech to communicate.

We often combine different ways of communicating at the same time. This is sometimes called multi-modal communication. We are all ‘multi-modal’ communicators, and this can look like:

• Body movements and gestures
• Facial expressions
• Technology and devices
• Writing and symbols
• Sign language
• Pictures and visual aids

This AAC Awareness Month, we're challenging assumptions about what communication really means.

Communication isn't just about speaking - it's a basic human right. Every form of communication is valid and valuable, and there are countless ways we connect and share our thoughts.

We support children, adults, and seniors throughout Brisbane, Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast - either at our Coorparoo or Graceville clinics, or in the comfort of your own home.

Sessions can be covered by your NDIS funding if applicable.
