This is a good explanation of tongue tie. If you suspect your baby has a tongue tie, it is important to ensure baby’s positioning and breast attachment are optimised. Incorrect latch can present with very similar symptoms to tongue tie. Also a better outcome will be achieved with the tongue release procedure if baby is attached well at the breast.

Tongue-tie occurs when the membrane under the baby's tongue (the lingual frenulum) restricts the movement of the tongue.
In some cases, the tongue is not free or doesn't move easily enough for the baby to attach properly to the breast.

It's a few days into the New Year but not too late to say a big Thank You to all the families I had the privilege to meet in 2023. This year I will continue to offer support with infant feeding, (breast, bottle and mixed). In addition I love helping new families with expectations of infant sleep and understanding their newborn.

Hope to see you in 2024!

Here are some good tips to consider before returning to work.

A recommended period to start building up your milk supply is around 2 - 4 weeks before you resume work. Many individuals find that their milk production is highest during the early morning. To take advantage of this, it's advised to pump right after your morning feeding session for approximately 10 minutes. Initially, the output might not be substantial, but regular pumping signals your body to increase milk production. By consistently pumping at the same time daily, your body will gradually produce more milk, providing you with an extra supply to pump and store. 👍

Remember that you don't necessarily need a large freezer stash before going back to work. Having enough milk to cover your first day or two at work is sufficient since you'll be pumping during your work hours corresponding to your baby's feeding times. ✔️

This years theme is about returning to work and breastfeeding. With a bit of planning it is completely possible to continue breastfeeding your baby when you return to work. You would have worked hard to establish it in the beginning and it’s unlikely your baby will want yo stop when you go back to work.

Here are five interesting facts about Breastfeeding...

This is still the biggest issue that I think I see with latching problems. We live in a very bottle feeding culture - we are used to seeing people move a bottle to a baby’s mouth. It’s very tempting (and super common) for us to treat breasts in the same way - position baby in our arms and then move the breast to their mouth. Baby latches on and then the breast is let go.
What would happen if you put a bottle in a baby’s mouth and then let go? It will fall / move.
What happens when you move the breast into a baby’s mouth and then let go? The same thing - it will fall/move back to it’s natural position. It will drag in the baby’s mouth causing a change in attachment and often pain.
The baby needs to come to the breast, not the other way around. Find out more here: https://www.carolsmyth.co.uk/babytobreast

Professional support to new mothers

Hi. I am Dianne, an experienced midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I would love to have the opportunity to provide you with personal, one-on-one support, in the comfort of your own home.

I am passionate about preparing mothers and their partners for parenting. I can assist with challenges such as breastfeeding or formula feeding difficulties, settling, winding and understanding your new baby’s cues (communication). I can assist with baby’s sleep by helping you understand the biology of infant sleep and empower you with strategies to remove the obstacles to healthy sleep.

I am affiliated with Grow Medical who offer GP services as well as specialised multidisciplinary services to new mothers in Brisbane. Grow Medical has two practices, Highgate Hill and Sherwood. I can offer a clinic consultation if this suits parents better than a home visit.
