Chicken soup is one of those wonder foods that is not just regarded for its flavour, but also for its therapeutic properties. This includes enhancing fertility and providing essential nutrients for you and your baby during pregnancy and after your little one is born. 👶 Making it yourself is the best way of taking advantage of its nutritional value.

INGREDIENTS
✅ One whole chicken (organic if possible) 🐔
✅ 2 large onions, chopped into slices
✅ 3 garlic cloves, minced or finely chopped
✅ 5 stalks celery, roughly chopped into 1cm pieces
✅ 2 bunches of parsley, whole
✅ 6 medium carrots, roughly chopped into 1cm pieces🥕
✅ 1 bay leaf
✅ Filtered water
✅ Around 1 tablespoon of salt to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
✅ Give the chicken a quick rinse under running water and place it in a large pot.
✅ Fill the pot with filtered water.
✅ Bring the pot to a boil and then reduce to a simmer.
✅ Allow the chicken to cook for two to three hours. This will ensure all the nutritional goodness from the bones soaks into the broth.
✅ In the meantime, slice the carrots and celery. 🔪
✅ Once the chicken has been cooked, sieve the stock into a separate bowl.
✅ Place the onions, garlic, celery, carrots, parsley, salt and bay leaf into the chicken stock and cook on low heat.
✅ Once the veggies are cooked, remove the chicken from the pot, cool and then remove the meat from the bones. Then add back to the broth.

As men age, they undergo a gradual decline in androgen levels which can lead to numerous changes, including reduced physical activity and sexual desire and changes in body composition.

A recent study set out to investigate the safety and efficacy of a proprietary blend of extracts of pomegranate rind (Punica granatum) and cocoa seed (Theobroma cocoa) on symptoms associated with male ageing such as decreased libido, reduced muscle mass and fatigue.

The study was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, involving 120 men who were randomly assigned into 3 groups receiving either the proprietary pomegranate-cocoa blend at a high or low dose, or a placebo. Participants were aged 36-55 years; body mass index (BMI): 20-29 kg/m2 and had ageing males’ symptoms (AMS) scores between 27 and 43.

The proprietary blend combined standardised aqueous ethanol extracts of pomegranate fruit rind and cocoa seed at a 4:1 ratio. The final product was standardised to contain at least 3.5% punicalagins and 0.5% theobromine. Participants in the low dose group took 200 mg of the proprietary blend, the high dose group took 400 mg of the proprietary blend and the third group took a matching placebo. Each group took one of their prescribed capsules after breakfast each day consecutively for 8 weeks. The participants were evaluated on a variety of standardised scales at various times during the study.

The results showed that both doses of the pomegranate-cocoa blend significantly reduced the AMS scores after 56 days of supplementation (400mg 19.3% reduction and 200mg 15.51%, P < 0.05 vs. baseline and placebo). In addition, both supplemented groups reported significantly improved general, psychological and sexual well-being, as well as improved hand-grip strength and reduced perceived stress. Serum levels of free testosterone (FT) and total testosterone (TT) levels were significantly increased in both supplemented groups compared to the baseline and placebo. (400mg increased FT by 48.28% and TT by 24.56% from baseline. 200mg increased FT by 39.16% and TT by 21.39% from baseline). The authors noted that the blend was well tolerated by participants with no adverse events reported and total blood work and urine analysis supported the broad spectrum safety.

Over several years,, I have studied and practiced various aspects of both herbal medicine and complementary medicine. I have made friends and met so many wonderful people along the way!

My mission in life is to help others to achieve optimal health, reduce stress and tension and do it in a way that is sustainable. In a country that seems to divide medicine, this is not always a straightforward process.

The research in complementary medicine is always undergoing change and we seem to always be fighting for recognition of what we do as complementary medicine practitioners and the methods we use to prevent disease or sustain health in our patients. Staying up to date with the latest research is paramount for not just naturopaths and herbalists, but for all medical practitioners. Often, our patients are disillusioned with mainstream medicine.

When patients come to see me, they are often at a loss of what to do and are seeking help to overcome their health issues. They may be feeling tired, fatigued, no energy, or trying to cope with anxiety, depression, poor sleep etc. They may have been suffering with a chronic medical condition they’ve had for several years or sometimes their symptoms, their lives and everything in general is just getting on top of them and they need guidance and/or help to feel well again. Today’s world is a busy place! Our bodies are exposed to an increasing number of environmental toxins, in our food, in our environment.... Lifestyles are busy and for many, very stressful. We are travelling more, working more and health wise, our bodies are under pressure. Like a well oiled machine, it needs to be maintained if we want it to go the distance.
