Language Disorder Australia We provide education, support and advocacy for children and young people with Language Disorder.

Language Disorder Australia (former Speech and Language Disorder Australia – SALDA) is Australia’s trusted network of professionals and services, committed to ensuring extraordinary outcomes — beyond what anyone imagined possible — for children and young people with Language Disorder. With over 40 years’ experience providing high-quality education, support, and advocacy for our clients and their families across the country, we are boldly spearheading a better future for all children and young people with Language Disorder, unafraid to do things differently in the pursuit of our vision. Our multidisciplinary and integrated network of educators and allied health professionals work with our partners, community and government to provide services that consider and address all aspects of life. Through our work at The Glenleighden School, across the education system and via our private allied health clinics, we deliver contemporary, integrated support underpinned by evidence-based research — placing our clients’ needs at the heart of everything we do. It’s these services which enable us to unlock new pathways that allow children and young people with Language Disorder to forge their own path for success — a path that is uniquely theirs, and which will see them connect and thrive in their communities and find their place in the world. We stand strong in our belief that all children have the right to access quality education and support which addresses their needs, because everyone — no matter our differences — deserves to belong. At Language Disorder Australia, we will keep working to build a world of greater understanding and connection, to allow children and young people with Language Disorder to unleash their full extraordinary potential.

Did you know that Language Disorder Australia has 7 values, each represented in the acronym SPEAKER?

The K stands for Kindness, one of our core values - “We are friendly, generous and considerate in everything we do”

Kindness is truly at the heart of everything we do 💛

As we celebrate World Kindness Day, we’re reminded that kindness isn’t just a value, it’s a practice. We champion kindness through every conversation, classroom, and connection, supporting children with Language Disorder and upskilling those who work alongside them.

✨ In recognition of Kindness Day, we’re sharing a free resource, our small way to spread kindness further.

We would like to acknowledge Mancel College, who created something truly special for DLD Awareness Day 2025.

They brought together students, families and staff for a vibrant community event that blended learning with fun. Highlights included interactive games, music from the team, and a powerful keynote from guest speaker Clancy Doe, a former Mancel College student and Yale graduate.

Clancy’s story was a reminder of what’s possible when students with Developmental Language Disorder are understood and supported.
The event captured the heart of this year’s theme, You Can’t See DLD, by showing what visibility, inclusion and advocacy can achieve.

Language Disorder Australia is proud to recognise Mancel College’s continued leadership and commitment.

Thank you to everyone for being part of DLD Awareness Day 2025 last Friday.

This year’s theme, You Can’t See DLD, helped raise important conversations across schools, clinics, and communities.

With colourful classrooms and national landmark light-ups, Australians took action to make Developmental Language Disorder more visible.

We’re grateful for every educator, parent, student, and clinician who shared the message.

Language Disorder is often hidden, but with the right support, young people can thrive.

At Language Disorder Australia, our work continues every day to ensure that awareness becomes action.

Here is your answer to our True or False!

❌ FALSE.
Developmental Language Disorder can persist into adulthood, continuing to impact communication, education, and employment opportunities.

Recognising DLD as a lifelong condition helps ensure that individuals receive the understanding and support they deserve, not just as children, but throughout their lives.

Developmental Language Disorder Day ( ), now in its seventh year, is celebrated annually around the world with more than 40 countries involved. In 2024, 108 locations across the globe participated in light-up events where landmarks worldwide lit up in purple and yellow to raise awareness.

How you can get involved this year:

Go purple & yellow – Wear the colours, decorate your school or clinic, or light up a local landmark.

Spread the word – Share messages, resources, and stories on your social channels.

Educate your community – Host a talk, workshop, or morning tea to help others understand DLD.

Join the global campaign – Follow and tag to connect with the worldwide movement.

Together, we can keep raising awareness and advocating for children and young people with DLD.

Teachers, are you looking for practical ways to better support students with Language Disorder?

Here are 5 simple tips you can start using today to help them thrive:

1. “Chunk” and “drip feed” the information - break information into more manageable steps.

2. Face the student when giving verbal information or instructions.

3. Cue the student to attend and listen before speaking or giving instructions.

4. Check the level of understanding - use open-ended as opposed to ‘yes/no’ questions (e.g. “How are the snake and the lizard different?” instead of “Are the snake and lizard different?”).

5. Provide clear and consistent expectations

This term, we welcomed Siahn, a Master of Speech Pathology student, to our School Support Services team.

Working closely with Meg MacKenzie, Senior Speech Pathologist and Team Leader, Siahn has jumped straight into planning, conducting school visits, and writing reports. Her commitment shines through in every task, reflecting both her passion for supporting students with Language Disorder and her drive for excellence.

At Language Disorder Australia, we believe in empowering the next generation of clinicians by providing opportunities for them to learn and grow. By welcoming tertiary students like Siahn, we respect and nurture the profession, give back through service, and live out the values that guide everything we do.

We’re grateful for Siahn’s enthusiasm and for Meg’s outstanding leadership as a clinical educator. Together, they demonstrate what it means to support with excellence and impact 💙
