Did you catch this announcement this week? If you work as a teacher in a very remote area for four years, we’ll help cover your study debt.

We want to make it easier for very remote areas to attract teachers - and keep them.

Because our youngest Australians deserve the best education, no matter where they live.

For the last 6 years the last Saturday in February has seen us attend parkrun for parkrundownunderday.

The date will not change - keep the last Saturday in February free (25th February). However, it will now be renamed parkruntheworldday and our primary goal is to volunteer. Our goal is to encourage more people to volunteer & help parkrun thrive - without volunteers parkrun would fold.

If you have never volunteered, then this is your day to do so. Head down to your local parkrun this Saturday and put your name on the list for Saturday February 25. Even if you do it once a year - this is the day to do so!! Let’s all put the volunteer vest over the top of our Run The World merch!!

Today is the first day Australians will have access to 10 days domestic violence leave.

This is life changing for many, and should be a proud day for all the survivors, advocates, front line workers and their unions who have fought long and hard for this.

A massive massive milestone has been achieved this week.

In a huge win for our local community - the playing field at Balmoral State High School which Campbell Newman originally tried to sell off but then gave away for free to Council instead - has now been formally transferred back to Education Department ownership.

Which means this mighty school, of which we’re all so proud, now has the land back which was theirs in the first place - to support its stunning growth in student numbers, and to add available green space.

Thank you to every single person along the way - and there have been many many thousands - who protested against the proposed sale, who signed my petitions to get Brisbane City Council to hand back the land (which they refused to do), who’ve been alongside me as we navigated the legal complexities of pretty much a forced take-over of the land from Council (in a tenure initiative that had never been done before).

Specially Nigel Gibson, who was on the Balmoral State High School P&C Association at the time of the proposed sale, and spearheaded the campaign.

As did Kevin Rudd and Shayne Sutton.

We’ve run a loooong campaign. And we’ve won.

Regretfully we need to share the news that we will be cancelling Kedron parkrun for this weekend - Saturday 5th March.
This is due to a number of factors including the current road closure of Shaw Rd and the amount of debris and hazards still out on course. The safety of our parkrunners and our community is of utmost importance to us.
We're also thinking of those members of our community that have been impacted by flooding or storm damage.
Brisbane City Council are working hard to make our parks and walkways safe, and we will be able to return sometime soon.

Today is a day that will give rise to complex and conflicting emotions. For many, it will be a time of deep pain and sorrow. I want to acknowledge that 26 January is scorched into the consciousness of many First Nations people as a day of profound mourning.

As the Chair of Beyond Blue – an organisation with a mission to support everyone in Australia to achieve their best mental health – I believe it’s vital we recognise the grief that this day can evoke. It’s a date connected to the ongoing impacts of colonisation. Dispossession, violence, disempowerment and the fracturing of ancestral and cultural knowledge are a source of historical and ongoing trauma that continues to impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations people.

As we understand more about our history, more Australians are reflecting on how to engage with 26 January. These conversations may be challenging but they are necessary for us to mature and heal as a nation.

Beyond Blue continues to advocate for action to Close the Gap, to improve social and emotional wellbeing, and to prevent su***de. We support the Uluru Statement from the Heart and a First Nations Voice to Parliament.

While we cannot change our past, we can learn from it. If we accept the truth of our shared history, we can walk together in a spirit of healing and reconciliation towards a brighter future.

If you find this day difficult, support is available. Contact 13YARN or the Beyond Blue Support Service on 1300 22 46 36
