Many children who wet the bed are constipated, even when parents donโ€™t suspect it. ๐Ÿšฝ๐Ÿ’ง

Constipation can affect nighttime dryness more than most people realize. When the bowel is full, it sits close to the bladder and can reduce how much urine the bladder can hold. It can also interfere with the nerve signals between the bladder and the brain that help a child wake during the night. ๐Ÿง โžก๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง

One tricky part: a child can poo every day and still be constipated. ๐Ÿคฏ

Signs arenโ€™t always obvious. They may include:
โžก๏ธ Hard, large or painful stools
โžก๏ธ Straining
โžก๏ธ Tummy discomfort
โžก๏ธ Frequent small wees
โžก๏ธ Urgency
โžก๏ธ Daytime accidents
โžก๏ธ Ongoing bedwetting ๐ŸŒ™

World Logic Day reminder ๐Ÿง

๐Ÿ’ฉ If constipation is present, bedwetting may not be a bladder issue on its own.

When the bowel is full, it can place pressure on the bladder and affect how it works overnight. Research referenced by the Canadian Paediatric Society suggests that, for many children, addressing constipation alone can lead to fewer wet nights.

So from a practical, logical point of view, one helpful place to start is:

โœ”๏ธ Check bowel habits before focusing only on dry nights.

Sometimes the most effective first step isnโ€™t just focusing on the bladder alone ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒ™

Constipation is far more common in children than many parents expect, and it can look different from one child to the next. ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‘ง

Every family approaches this in their own way. Some start with food. Others with daily routines. But it can be really tricky to get rid of, and then keep it away.

If you feel comfortable, sharing whatโ€™s helped in your home may help another parent whoโ€™s reading along. ๐Ÿ’™

Did you know that milk at night can contribute to bedwetting for some children?

Milk isnโ€™t a strong diuretic, but it is a fluid. In larger amounts close to bedtime, it can increase overnight urine in some children.

It can also play a role in other ways:
โžก๏ธ Bigger evening drinks = more urine overnight
โžก๏ธ Milk can have a mild diuretic effect in some children
โžก๏ธ For some kids, higher dairy intake can contribute to constipation, which can affect bladder control

If youโ€™ve noticed a possible connection, a few small adjustments can help you test it:

โœ… Offer milk earlier in the day
โœ… Keep bedtime drinks small
โœ… Always check bowel habits too

Watching for patterns and making small changes can give you helpful information.๐Ÿ’™

Feel free to like or share this tip with another parent who might find it useful.

When we shift from โ€œWhy are they doing this?โ€ to โ€œWhat are they needing right now?โ€ our perspective deepens, and our response becomes more compassionate.

Waking a child to use the toilet can help some children during the transition to dry nights ๐Ÿ›Œ. However, if there are no signs of progress after a few weeks, it can sometimes make things harder rather than easier.

What can happen is that the child learns to wake at a specific time, not because their bladder needs to empty, but because their body has learned the routine. Itโ€™s similar to waking at the same hour out of habit, rather than in response to a real physical need.

In many cases, children are still mostly asleep when they are taken to the toilet. They are not fully aware of their bladder filling, the sensation of needing to wee, or how to respond to that signal on their own.

Because of this, the learning that supports long-term nighttime dryness often does not take place. The brain does not get the chance to recognise and respond to bladder signals during sleep ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ˜ด.

This is why waking a child at night to use the toilet does not always lead to lasting dryness.

If your child is age 5+ and still wets the bed, itโ€™s likely youโ€™ve already tried different approaches.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Different routines.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Waking your child overnight.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Cutting back drinks.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Waiting and hoping this will pass.

What many parents arenโ€™t told is this: there are many factors that can contribute to wet nights. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s important to understand what may be causing the bedwetting and how to support your child as they build brain and bladder communication during sleep. ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒ™

When parents understand what helps, children tend to feel more supported, and progress often becomes easier. Thatโ€™s why an informative but gentle approach matters.

The Stay Dry at Night program is designed to support children aged 5 - 12 as they build brain-bladder communication. At the heart of the program is a clear, step-by-step guide to dry nights, along with soothing bedtime recordings created especially for children to help the brain and bladder learn to work together during sleep.

If youโ€™d like to learn more about how this approach works, you can find all the details via the link in our bio or comment ๐—•๐—Ÿ๐—”๐——๐——๐—˜๐—ฅ and weโ€™ll send it to you.

If bedwetting is still happening, here is a simple plan to support dry nights in 2026 ๐ŸŒ™

โœ”๏ธ Talk with your child about how the brain and bladder work together
โœ”๏ธ Use simple visuals or stories to help your child understand bladder signals
โœ”๏ธ Make bedtime a calm, predictable routine
โœ”๏ธ Donโ€™t wake your child to use the toilet overnight
โœ”๏ธ Avoid nappies or pull-ups if possible (use mattress protection instead)
โœ”๏ธ Let your child choose when they want to start working toward dry nights
โœ”๏ธ Help your child notice the path to the toilet (steps, lights, clear access)
โœ”๏ธ Try to ignore wet nights and acknowledge dry ones
โœ”๏ธ Keep your child in their own bed after a wet night
โœ”๏ธ Pay attention to how food, drink, and sleep affect bedwetting
โœ”๏ธ Focus on building body awareness and bladder control over time

If youโ€™d like support putting this into practice, we can help.
The Stay Dry at Night program brings these steps together in an easy to follow plan aimed for children aged 5-12 ๐Ÿ’™

Every child reaches dry nights in their own time. And as a new year begins, it can be a helpful to just pause, reset, and discover new ways of moving forward. ๐ŸŒ™โœจ

What matters is learning about the causes bedwetting and learning that what children need is steady, informative, consistent support.

Many families notice that progress happens more easily when children feel involved. Something as simple as letting your child choose the day they start becoming dry helps them feel in control rather than pressured. This sense of ownership can make the whole experience calmer and more positive for everyone.
