"My child poos every day and it looks soft. Can constipation still be part of the picture?โ€

Yes, it can. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

Constipation in children is not only about how often they poo, or whether the stool looks hard.
It can also be about incomplete emptying.

A child may pass soft stools every day and still retain stool over time. When the re**um stays full or stretched, it can sit close against the bladder, reduce bladder space, and make night-time bladder signals harder to notice.

Dr. Tarek Pacha, DO, a board-certified urologist and surgeon, describes this in a simple way: sometimes the bladder is not the main problem. It may be reacting to pressure from a full bowel.

This does not mean constipation is always the cause of bedwetting. But for some children, bowel health can be an important piece of the dry-night picture. ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿ’ง

Bowel and bladder function are closely connected in children.

A child can seem to be toileting normally during the day while stool is still building up in the bowel over time.

When stool stays in the bowel for too long, the re**um can become stretched and remain fuller than normal. Because the re**um and bladder sit close together, this pressure can reduce bladder capacity and interfere with the brain-bladder signals needed to wake a child during the night.

This is one reason constipation can sometimes contribute to bedwetting - even when daytime toileting seems completely normal.

If your child is over 5 and still wetting the bed, bowel health may be one factor worth looking at. ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿ’ง

Can snoring, mouth breathing, tonsils, or adenoids be linked to bedwetting? ๐ŸŒ™

For some children, airway and sleep issues may be one piece of the bedwetting puzzle.

Enlarged tonsils or adenoids can affect breathing during sleep. This may lead to snoring, mouth breathing, disrupted sleep, or signs of sleep-disordered breathing - all of which may make it harder for the brain to respond to bladder signals at night. Our blog, Tonsils, Adenoids and Bedwetting: Whatโ€™s the Connection?, looks at the possible link between airway issues, sleep disruption, and nighttime wetting in children.

Inside, we cover:

โœ… Why enlarged tonsils and adenoids may affect sleep
โœ… How mouth breathing may contribute to wet nights
โœ… Signs such as snoring, tired mornings, runny noses, or recurrent ear infections
โœ… Why bedwetting can have both medical and non-medical factors
โœ… When it may be helpful to speak with an ENT or health professional

Not every child who wets the bed has airway issues. But if a child is over 5, still wetting the bed, and also snores, mouth breathes, wakes tired, or has frequent congestion, this article may be worth sharing with another parent.

Night waking and bedwetting: what parents need to know ๐Ÿšฉ

Many parents wake their child during the night to reduce wet beds. This is often called โ€œlifting.โ€

For some families, it may help keep the bed dry that night. But for children with ongoing bedwetting, especially over age 5, waking them to p*e may not help build the brainโ€“bladder communication needed for long-term dry nights.

When a child is taken to the toilet while still sleepy, they may not fully register the feeling of a full bladder or learn to wake in response to bladder signals.

In our blog, Should You Wake Your Child to P*e at Night?, we look at:

โœ… Why scheduled night waking may not help ongoing bedwetting
โœ… How sleep disruption can affect bladder signals
โœ… Why brain-bladder communication matters
โœ… Practical steps parents can try before bed
โœ… When to look for a bedwetting solution that fits your family

If your child is aged 5 or over and still wetting the bed most nights, this article may help you understand why lifting is not always the best long-term approach.

Can celiac disease be linked to bedwetting in children? ๐Ÿค”

Celiac disease and bedwetting are not linked for most children. But in a small number of medical observations and case reports, celiac disease has been identified in children with persistent bedwetting alongside other health signs, such as constipation, tiredness, low iron, poor sleep, stomach discomfort, or slower growth.

Bedwetting has many possible contributing factors. For some children, nighttime bladder control may be affected by bowel function, sleep regulation, nutrient absorption, and nervous system signaling.

Routine celiac testing is not needed for every child who wets the bed. But if bedwetting continues despite different approaches, especially in later primary school years, and other health signs are present, it may be worth discussing with a doctor.

This post is informational only and does not replace medical assessment.

Could allergies be affecting your childโ€™s nighttime bladder control? ๐Ÿคง

For some children, allergies may contribute to bedwetting by disrupting sleep or blocking nasal passages making breathing through the nose more difficut at night. And when sleep is broken, the brain may find it harder to respond to bladder signals.

It is not always the cause. But it may be one piece of the bedwetting ?? worth looking at.

Helpful changes may include:

โ€ข Using hypoallergenic bedding
โ€ข Washing sheets weekly in hot soapy water
โ€ข Keeping bedroom windows closed during high pollen days
โ€ข Showering or washing hair before bed
โ€ข Keeping pets out of the sleeping area
โ€ข Using a humidifier if dry air is an issue

Read more in our blog to learn how allergies may be linked with bedwetting.
