How to keep hearing aids sounding new?
Hearing aids are usually sitting inside the ear canals, probably for 10 hours a day or more, where sebaceous glands and apocrine glands produce oil and sweat. The body temperature can also warm up the hearing aids. They are also exposed to dust, dead skin and interference from the hairs inside the ears. All these factors result in hearing aids becoming weak and muffled. Therefore, it is very important to keep your hearing aids clean. Follow these steps below to keep your hearing aids in tip-top condition.
1. Wipe the hearing aids with cleaning wipes.
2. If your hearing aids are fitted with wax filters, replace them regularly.
3. Some hearing aids and ear moulds are fitted with air vents. The vent size is usually small and can be easily blocked. Inserting a cleaning wire or using an air blower will unblock the air vent.
4. Purchase a D-Dryer device equipped with a UV light to kill the germs on your hearing aid’s
surface and to remove moisture.

What is earwax?
The term “earwax” is given due to the waxy texture of the substance. The official name is “cerumen” which is a mixture of dead skin cells and secretions from the ceruminous gland (sweat gland) and sebaceous glands (excretes oil) located in the skin of the outer one-third of the ear canal. The functions of cerumen include cleaning, protection and lubrication of the ear canal. For adults, due to the angle of the ear canal, cerumen is typically expelled from the ear canal spontaneously via a self-cleaning mechanism called ‘migration’ that is an extremely slow process of skin movement from the centre of the eardrum to the edge of the eardrum and then out along the earcanal. Finally, the skin sheds off mixed with the earwax. The process is assisted by jaw movement, the smooth earcanal skin surface and gravity. Cerumen build up is common. Treatment is required when the following symptoms occur:
1. Earache
2. Ear blockage sensation
3. Reduced hearing
4. Increase in Tinnitus
5. Ear infection
6. Prevention of viewing the ear drum by doctors
7. Reduction of hearing aid performance.

Hearing Well Tips – for you, friends and family
According to the HCIA report in 2020, 3.95 million Australians have hearing loss. If someone is finding it hard to hear you, follow these simple tips to help you communicate clearly:
1. speak face to face to the person;
2. reduce background noise;
3. speak slower, modulate the voice slightly louder but don’t shout;
4. attract the person’s attention before you start talking to them;
5. use natural hand gestures to assist communication;
6. use simple words, make the subject of the conversation as clear as possible;
7. rephrase the statement if necessary;
8. avoid other noise distractions (e.g. TV);
9. give the person time to process what you have said;
10. if you speak on the phone, make sure you speak directly into the phone’s mouthpiece, but don’t hold it too close. Try to speak in an indoor quiet environment with good signal reception(mobile);
11. be patient and show understanding.
12 If the person has hearing aids, ensure the hearing aids are working and ask the person to wear them properly.

MOVIE recommended: CODA

It is a heartfelt drama about a hearing girl in a deaf family. Like many good movies, it lets you feel the character and connect with them. This teenage girl has a gift in music, growing up in a deaf family which struggles to make ends meet. The story is about family, about love, about struggle, about conflict, about sacrifice. This movie brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me of the experience when I worked as a volunteer for a deaf society about 30 years ago. If you are looking for a good Friday night movie, CODA is a fantastic choice.
