The Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) recorded a $54 million surplus over the last five years. Instead of being reinvested into the subsidy to help those who need it most, that money was redirected back into hospital budgets.
โ€‹It makes you wonder...
โ€‹Why hasn't the Government increased subsidy rates? Why are patients told to reschedule vital appointments because the scheme won't cover the only flights available? Why is travel support for escorts being denied to patients who shouldn't be traveling alone?
โ€‹Thatโ€™s over $10 million a year "saved" through restrictive decisionsโ€”money that stays with the hospitals rather than supporting the patients the scheme was designed for.
โ€‹It is not right. The funding is there to make patient travel affordable, and these changes can and should be implemented immediately.
โ€‹Please take a moment to sign and share this petition to demand fair travel support for our rural communities.

Our Story

Our Achievements Over the years, RDAQ has represented rural communities, rural doctors and health professionals at the policy and local level and has a proud record of achievement.

RDAQ represents Queensland rural doctors: specialist and generalist, public and private, procedural and non-procedural, Australian trained and overseas trained. RDAQ has developed strong working relationships with the Queensland Government and Opposition across the political divide; within Queensland Health; and with other rural groups and stakeholders. These relationships do not compromise our independence or our ability to comment frankly on issues of concern. We have been able to achieve significant gains for salaried medical officers in public, community and private settings and self-employed rural practitioners. Critically we act in rural and remote communities interests and continue to address the gap in health outcomes for those living and working in the bush.
