Dogs + healthcare workers = instant mood boost!
Our hardworking staff at PA Hospital were in for a paw-sitively cute surprise today, with Delta Therapy Dogs spreading happiness and head pats as part of a special wellness initiative. 🐶
For Hanh Huynh, volunteering at PA Hospital has been a labour of love, memories and service since her husband passed away almost a decade ago.
Hanh says since she started volunteering she has enjoyed her own personal successes in supporting the hospital that supported her family, having moved over from Vietnam to seek better opportunities for her family.🥰
Every week she eagerly comes in with her fellow Metro South volunteers Hoa Ngo and Nhieu Le and Lunar New Year this weekend in particular is the highlight of their year! Hanh, Hoa and Nhieu love getting dressed up for the festive season, donning their favourite Red Ao Dai (cultural dress), a symbol of luck and prosperity for the new year.❤️
2024 is also the year of the Dragon🐲
We wish Hanh, Hoa and Nhieu and everyone celebrating across Metro South, a happy and prosperous Lunar New Year!🎇
World first 3D printed chest scaffold transforms Brisbane Woman's 'funnel chest'
Princess Alexandra Hospital has transformed the life of a Brisbane woman who has lived with a birth defect known as ‘funnel chest’ using the world’s first 3D-printed biodegradable chest scaffold.
Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon Dr Michael Wagels said the difference was mind-blowing and he felt like the removal of the dressings was a religious experience for everyone in the room.
“I was initially worried that she didn’t like it because she was crying but she said ‘I love it! I have waited so long for this!’ It was very moving.” he said.
The implant is made from a porous biodegradable material and was manufactured thanks to innovative research with Prof Dietmar W. Hutmacher at Queensland University of Technology to fit precisely over the chest deformity allowing ingrowth of the patient’s own blood vessels and fat tissue, creating a more normal chest shape for the patient.
Patient, Caitlin Rutherford-Heard (21) describes the moment that the dressings were finally removed after the surgery as the moment she had been waiting for her whole life – the realisation that she was finally a woman.
“I think I was in shock! There were certainly tears but seeing myself for the first time was a revelation that exceeded my expectations,” Caitlin said.
Thanks to 10 News First for covering this amazing transformation.

QEII Hospital celebrates Harmony Week
QEII Hospital staff came together to celebrate the diversity of staff and patients within the QEII community as part of Harmony Week in March.
FACT: 22% of patients presenting to QEII are culturally or linguistically diverse.
The team brought in bunches of flowers on Monday 16 March to deliver to patients on the wards, brightening the day of many who were reminded how valuable they are as a member of Queensland’s most diverse multicultural community.
Great going team!

Respiratory Trials to begin at PA Hospital
Respiratory researchers based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Translational Research Institute (TRI) are leading a clinical trial to test a potentially simple and inexpensive solution to older people succumbing to influenza.
Study lead, Princess Alexandra Hospital Senior Respiratory Physician Professor John Upham said he had spent several years searching for a way to make the influenza vaccine work better in older people, especially those with lung diseases.
“We had an idea that if we changed the diet, we could improve the immune system’s ability to respond to the flu vaccine,” said Prof Upham.
“After running a small pilot trial in 2019, we found that older people who consumed a fibre supplement daily produced a lot more antibodies after getting a flu shot,” he said.
People interested in taking part in the study can contact the study nurse via phone (07) 3176 5394 or email [email protected]. Participants will be required to make three visits to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, with parking reimbursable.

ICU Outreach team celebrates 10 years at PA Hospital
Queensland’s first ever Intensive Care Unit Outreach Service is celebrating 10 years of service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) this month.
The 24/7 service is nurse-led and offered hospital wide as an integral part of the Rapid Response team, ensuring fast recognition and response to clinical deterioration of patients.
The current ICU Outreach Clinical Nurse Consultant team said this is a great millstone.
“We have an amazing team of nurses who work with multidisciplinary teams throughout the hospital in managing acutely deteriorating patients.
“The team provide a wealth of formal and informal education to ward, nursing and medical staff throughout the hospital with identification and management of the deteriorating patient,” they said.
