Accomplished pianist Dr. Vicky Yang left a lasting legacy for Logan's palliative care patients. Before her passing in 2021, she donated a beautiful piano to the ward, hoping to bring peace and comfort through music. 🎵

NUM Gillian Myles shared, “Vicky was an incredible pianist who found solace in music during her time with us. Despite her terminal diagnosis, she played every day, bringing joy to staff and fellow patients.”

Today, Vicky's piano continues to fill the ward with rich, soothing sounds, bringing comfort to everyone.

“We are so grateful for this everlasting gift. RIP Vicky.” 💖

A powerful team of 23 participants from PA Hospital’s Post Anaesthetic Care Unit are punching out the Push-Up Challenge this June with a healthy 9737 push-ups already under their belt. 💪

Registered Nurse, Jonathan El Badoui said their challenge is running for 24 days from 5 June to 28 June to raise awareness for mental health alongside fundraising for Lifeline Australia or Headspace Australia.

“The idea is to do 3249 push-ups each which represents the estimated number of people who su***de every year.

“We had a great start to the challenge with $600 raised in less than 24 hours and nine days in we are up to $2182 of our goal to raise $5000 for the cause,” he said.

Jonathan, who completed the graduate nurse program in February this year after making a career change from corporate partnerships in the fitness industry, was pleased to bring his first love of fitness as a vehicle to build team spirit. Go team!

We're so excited to see our new healthcare facilities are coming to life with the Redland Hospital Expansion well underway.
We've poured over 14,000 cubic meters of concrete – enough to fill the Cleveland Olympic swimming pool nearly six times!
This project will bring 37 extra overnight beds including an Intensive Care Unit, which means even more healthcare services close to home in the Redlands.
Construction is in full swing with walls going up, windows being installed on Levels One and Two, staircases completed, and essential services like electrical, plumbing, and medical gas being put in place. Stay tuned for more updates.

As we head into Winter, babies born at Beaudesert Hospital will be snug as bugs in rugs thanks to a generous donation of cot quilts from the local quilters club.

Beaudesert Quilters who recently donated around 100 hand-made quilts to the hospital said they had another hundred ready to go, most made with fabric donated by the community.

Maternity Nurse Unit Manager Nicole Tucker said little touches like the gift of a one-of-a-kind cot quilt made the birthing experience at Beaudesert Hospital extra special.

“The quilts are well received with new parents often commenting that the quilts are a precious keepsake,” she said.

“It’s a unique show of community support for families birthing in rural hospitals.”

Renee is a remarkable Speech Pathologist at PA Hospital, and we want to tell you all about her incredible work! 🔊

She's harnessed the power of telehealth to deliver a much-needed Speech Pathology Service for cancer patients in the far reaches of Redlands Coast.

Renee’s work has allowed the established PA Hospital speech pathology cancer service to benefit cancer patients in Redland, by supporting the new Redlands Satellite Hospital to provide care closer to home.

“The reality is that patients don’t need to come into clinic for the services that we provide. We can safely and effectively provide services to patients via telehealth,” Renee said.

Renee was recently awarded the PAH Staff Values Award for May for her amazing work on engagement in this space. Congratulations Renee!

Meet QEII Hospital's first ever Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) for Geriatrics, Stimi Thomas. 👩🏽‍⚕️

Bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for advancing Geriatric care to the new role, Stimi is well within her element at QEII after 11 years of nursing. 🏥

From clinical support to nurse education and patient advocacy work, Stimi is all about enhancing patient-centred care - especially for those with complex needs.

“Coming into this role, I wanted to endorse more in-depth training for our nurses, so they can better communicate with and better manage patients with complex needs. Having a deeper understanding of conditions like dementia and delirium empowers our nurses to take a more confident and compassionate approach, and ultimately make the best decisions for our patients.”

While she balances a full roster and a Master's Degree, Stimi says her time with patients is still the highlight of her day.

“I love the little chats and interactions I have with patients and their families. That’s when I get to do my assessment and build some rapport with them. All of that helps me start to develop a plan for them, and advocate for the patient’s best interests." 🤍

Congratulations on this new appointment, Stimi! 👏 QEII is so glad to have you. ✨

Five-year-old Valentina Davey had a delightful visit from Logan Hospital's wonderful ward nannies, Lorraine and Diane recently.

Unable to leave her hospital room, Valentina enjoyed painting and playtime at her bedside, all thanks to our newly expanded Ward Nanny Program.

This program, now including the Children’s Inpatient Unit, offers families a much-needed break from bedside duties.

Valentina's parents, Anna and Anton, were thrilled to see their daughter's confidence and joy as she engaged with the nannies. They’re excited to use her colourful artwork to brighten up the room.

Our Ward Nanny Program is dedicated to bringing comfort and relief to more families, and we're always looking for more volunteers to join our team.

Australia’s first Nurse Practitioner (NP) for Toxicology, Ben Learmont has confirmed a staggering fourfold increase in GHB-related ED presentations over the past 24 months.

“We have seen GHB-related presentations increase from five a month to the equivalent of almost one per day over two years,” reveals Ben.

GHB is an illicit recreational drug often referred to as the date-rape drug. It acts as a nervous system depressant, but Ben warms the long-term effects include dependence, heart disease, severe memory issues, extreme anxiety and breathing problems.

“PAH data shows that GHB-related presentations are now the second most common recreational intoxication causing people to need emergency care, behind methamphetamines.”

Ben’s role within PA hospital’s Toxicology Unit is to treat poisoned patients presenting to the ED. This includes deliberate self-poisoning, accidental poisoning, recreational substance misuse and abuse, occupational exposure and envenomation.

Look 👀, he's great at his job, but he would still prefer you didn't end up here, so please take care and look after your friends.

Longstanding consultant general physician Professor Ian Scott has made remarkable contributions to his field since taking on the role of inaugural Director of Internal Medicine at the PA Hospital in 1996.

He was tasked with building the unit from the ground up, and after nearly 30 years, is now preparing to bid farewell to a role that’s changed significantly since its inception.

“Originally, the department was assigned around 60 to 70 beds, but that has grown to 120 beds in 2024 and we average 110 to 120 admissions a week. We now have six consultants with up to 10 advanced trainee registrars rotating through the year."

Prof Scott is stepping down from his PAH Director role at the end of June, but will be taking up a part time appointment with Metro South's Digital Health and Informatics team to continue working on various projects.

He's looking forward to having more time on his hands to enjoy the things he loves, including spending time with family, travelling, and hiking.

“It’ll also be nice to indulge in a bit of recreational reading of books that are non-medical,” he said.

While this chapter of Prof Scott’s career is coming to a close, there are no doubts he leaves a legacy of dedication and expertise within the walls of the PA Hospital and beyond. 👏

QEII Hospital's Financial Services Revenue team have stepped their way into first place 🥇 for Metro South in the Queensland Health 10,000 Steps Challenge in May. 👟

Clocking in a daily average of 19,000 steps each, and an incredible overall score of 4,665,626 for the month, the 'Show me the Money' team lived up to their name - and proved it's about more than winning prizes.

“As we get older, we’re more mindful of our health, our mobility and metabolism. That motivated us to do those extra steps and really look at what we are doing on a daily basis to keep ourselves healthy, both physically and mentally,” said Team Captain Carmen Beerman (pictured far left).

Carmen says the winning recipe was a healthy dose of competitive team spirit, mindful goal-setting, and finding creative ways to get their steps in 🦶 between office work.

“I am so proud of our team. For a team of admin staff whose roles are office-bound to compete with teams who are on their feet all day, just shows how everyone in this team has given 100% to the challenge.” 💪

Congratulations to the whole team on this step-tastic achievement! 👏

Beaudesert’s Midwife of the Year Yana Adam describes midwifery as a beautiful balance of art and science.

The Russian-born midwife explained that unlike other areas of medicine, perinatal care could not be solved with just a pill or a test, that instead, it also relied on the art of watching and listening to the mother.

“Especially in labour, it is an art to watch and listen to the labouring person’s progress and see what they may need. As midwives, we can often tell when a mother is ready to have her baby by the way she behaves or breathes,” she said.

Yana said after eight years as a midwife she felt grateful to have been involved in countless births, describing each pregnancy and birth as a unique journey.

“My time as a midwife has seen many highs and lows, but this is what makes it special, and I am blessed to never be alone and always be supported by my amazing colleagues.”

A champion of advancing stroke care, Stroke Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) Jessica Wood has claimed the title of QEII Hospital’s 2024 International Nurses Day (IND) 👩🏻‍⚕️ Nurse of the Year. 🥇

Balancing roles as a CNC, Clinical Facilitator, and A/Nurse Educator, Jessica's passion for the brain shines through every aspect of her work. 🧠

"I wear a different hat every day. I really enjoy caring for patients with neurological disorders and supporting them through recovery. Brain injuries are life-changing and often debilitating, so I get a lot of satisfaction from being a positive force in the patient’s life and recovery during that time,” she said. 🤍

Adding the award to a long list of early career achievements, Jessica has led a number of care-advancing initiatives, with the support of the 4B team and ED. 🏥

“It's important to share the achievements of the positive work that my nursing colleagues and I are doing, to shed light on the great things being done in the nursing world."

Congratulations Jessica! We can't wait to see what you do next. 👏✨

Beaudesert Hospital recently hosted the SWAPNet Rural Perioperative Team Training Program, a vital initiative aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of rural healthcare professionals. The program saw enthusiastic participation from 19 medical, nursing, and theatre support staff from across the region.

NUM Perioperative Services Jason Roberts said participants engaged in intensive training sessions covering advanced life support, front-of-neck access techniques, and immersive crisis management scenarios.

A new world-first gut microbiome treatment for Parkinson’s disease will soon be trialled in Brisbane.

Associate Professor Gordon said the team at Translational Research Institute (TRI) received major funding to make the study possible.

“Emerging evidence suggests that many of the known features of Parkinson’s, such as persistent inflammation and activation of the immune system, are closely linked to an imbalance of microbes in the gut,” he said.

“If our approach is successful, it will open new avenues for potentially slowing or stopping Parkison’s disease and improving the quality of life for millions living with this condition.”

Associate Professor Gordon and his team from the QUT School of Biomedical Sciences were awarded two grants from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) totalling $4 million.

The research includes collaborating neurologists from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s and Princess Alexandra Hospitals including Associate Professor John O’Sullivan, Dr Robert Adam and TRI-based Associate Professor Alex Lehn, who works at Metro South Health and QUT.

She's a Nurse Practitioner, a Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) and an expert in complex skin conditions. 👩🏻‍⚕️

Now, PA Hospital's NUM Dermatology Christine Shen has levelled up her skincare game one more time, taking out the title of PAH's 2024 International Nurses Day Nurse of the Year. 🥇

Between clinical work and complex care coordination, Christine's passion for the body's largest organ is more than skin-deep.

But it's her solution-focused approach to patient care that claimed her the top spot, after she led the launch of the unit's first Virtual Teledermatology Clinic (VTC). 👩🏻‍💻

Launched in just 3 months, the VTC triages patients based on key markers like demographic, clinical condition and severity of symptoms, effectively fast-tracking patient care.

"Patients who accept the Planned Care clinic pathway are usually offered a virtual consult within 2-3 days of receiving their paperwork. This has enabled an additional 100 consultations each week," says Christine.

Great work, Christine and team! 👏 We think that's pretty remarkable. ✨

Do you remember Ash? Just six weeks ago, we cheered as he completed his chemotherapy treatment. Today, this remarkable young man returned to Logan Hospital with a special mission: to deliver Supertees to some of our most unwell patients.

Wearing his Space Commander Supertee Ash delivered 100 packages, containing the 'updated version of the traditional hospital gown', pillowcase and hand-written note, to the ward.

The delivery of the brightly coloured, hospital-friendly superhero shirts, marked the 89th donation to an Australian hospital from the charity organisation that is on a mission to gift a Supertee medical garment to every child facing serious or long-term illness in hospital.

With the help of mum Nataasha, Ash explained that the shirts helped kids who were sick like him, feel brave enough to undergo difficult procedures and treatments.

“As soon as Ash put on the t-shirt his confidence grew and he was better able to tolerate his treatments,” Nataasha said.

“The shirts have a lovely way of making kids feel special and brave, and I love that they can wear them in for their surgical procedures rather than a plain hospital gown.”

Excitement was in the air as patient Danny Williams received his Supertee from Ash and they made fast friends, racing off on an adventure -or was it an exploration mission?- after the exchange.

Nataasha said it was moments like these that made her so happy to be involved with the charity.

“I love that I am able to see the difference these shirts make to sick kids and love seeing their faces light up when they receive their little package,” she said.

Thank you Ash and Supertee for bringing a big batch of bravery to our ward!

24/05/2024

Hundreds of toys and gift vouchers have been donated to Logan Hospital’s Children’s Unit in honour of little Quinn Juarez.

Beautiful Quinn tragically lost her battle with brain cancer almost one year ago, and in the lead up to what would have been her seventh birthday, her family visited the hospital to spread joy in her name.

Quinn’s mum Tamara and family member Kara said her school, friends, family and community had come together to generously donate enough toys, books and games to fill three cars to the brim.

A large gathering of Quinn’s loved ones helped deliver the donations to the hospital, and even put together a special storage cupboard called “Quinn’s Quest”.

They said thanks to the generosity of local businesses, they were also able to donate meal and grocery vouchers for the families of little patients as part of the toy drive.

“Having a child undergo long-term treatment and lengthy stays in hospital can put a lot of financial stress on families and we wanted to ease the burden in some way,” they said.

“Among other things we have Uber Eats vouchers so families don’t have to worry about preparing meals while they’re here and Woolworths vouchers to easily pick up groceries.”

The family said they chose to give back to Logan Hospital because it was Quinn’s favourite hospital, and home to her favourite Oncology Nurse Candace Chisolm, with whom she was ‘besotted’.

They said they hoped to gain not-for-profit status this year, creating a legacy for their beloved Quinn, and helping to mend their hearts.

“We aim to visit the hospital each year around Quinn’s birthday, to top up the toy cupboard in the name of our beautiful girl,” they said.

PA Hospital is alive with the sound of music 🎵 thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers who generously donate their time and talents to bring a smile to patients, visitors and staff. 🏥

Vollie Joe (image 1) is a familiar face around campus after 12 years on the PAH musical roster, and says it is a joy to share his music with the community, while raising vital funds for the PA Research Foundation - a cause close to his heart. 💙

"I've had lots of surgeries and I know what’s going to happen, so I can relate to people who are coming in for different procedures or treatments and feeling stressed.

"I love being able to give from what I've got. I really enjoy talking to patients, and the amount I get out of it is just phenomenal," he said.

This 20-26 May, PAH Volunteer Services celebrates National Volunteer Week, marking the occasion with a special event complete with an awards ceremony, morning tea and musical fun. 🎶

PAH wouldn't be the same without our vollies. Thank you for all you do! 🌼
