Iyengar Yoga
has four distinct elements; technique, sequencing, timing and the use of props. A disciplined, and deeply researched system, developed over 75 years ago by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar; exploring, studying, writing and teaching about Yoga. In a class this is achieved by practising physical postures or asanas concentrating on alignment by focusing the mind into the body. These physical pos
tures are challenging in body and mind and so in the Iyengar system we work with props so that these challenges can be adapted to suit all body types, injuries and medical conditions. Iyengar yoga is one of the most widely recognised Hatha Yoga techniques in the Western world. Teacher training in this method requires a commitment to a rigorous and systematic method of training and ongoing professional development within the requirements of BKS Iyengar association requirements. What are the benefits? Iyengar Yoga can:
• Relieve back and neck pain
• Improve digestion and posture
• Increase flexibility, decrease stiff, tight muscles
• Strengthen and tone muscles
• Relieve insomnia
• Improve stamina and energy levels
• Develop strength and co-ordination
• Reduces stress
• Teaches relaxation

FAQ
Is it ok to eat/drink before class? It is best to leave 1-2 hours after a light meal and 3 hours after a heavy meal before practising yoga. A light snack 1 hours before is fine – cup of tea and piece of toast, glass of juice is often enough to keep you going without disturbing your digestion in class. What if I am menstruating? Please advise your teacher if you are menstruating, as some of the postures are unsuitable at this time. How often should I attend? Coming once or twice a week will make a noticeable difference to students understanding and progress. It will assist you and your teacher if you attend class regularly.
