Mater Mothers' Perinatal Loss Team has received some very special memory quilts made by Year 10 textiles students from Brisbane South State Secondary College.

These handmade quilts help families who have experienced a loss to create comforting memories with their baby.

The school hosted Mater Clinical Midwives Cherie, Sophia and Emilie for an afternoon tea to discuss the impact of the students' donation on delivering compassionate care to grieving families.

Thank you to Ms Jones' class at Brisbane South State Secondary College for your kindness and generosity. 💕

Welcome to world, Lottie! 😍

This beautiful newborn was delivered at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane last week and Lottie’s sports-mad parents, Daisy and James, watched the game from their room at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane.

“We are in a total love bubble with Lottie. She looked so cute in her Brisbane Lions gear!"

Meet the hormones that help bring your baby into the world! 👋🤰

Hormones are the chemical messengers of your body, and play key roles in labour progression, birth, lactation, and bonding with your baby.

Understanding these hormones can help you navigate the journey of childbirth with confidence 💖😊

💜 Oxytocin - During labour, oxytocin levels are elevated, triggering contractions, and dilating the cervix. After labour, oxytocin helps you bond with your baby, and triggers milk ejection during breastfeeding.

💜 Endorphins - Endorphins are the body's natural pain relievers and mood boosters, helping you feel calm and relaxed during childbirth.

💜 Prostaglandins - Prostaglandins work with oxytocin to prepare the body for labour, softening the cervix, and assisting in starting contractions.

💜 Prolactin - During labour, prolactin levels rise to stimulate milk production in the mammary glands, and to promote nurturing and bonding with your baby.

Identical twins Margot and Amelie were born at 34 weeks' gestation at Mater Mothers' Private Brisbane.

Mum Tegan said her now seven-month-old daughters are ‘thriving at home,’ and love reading books with their older brothers, and playing peek-a-boo.

When the twins were born, Margot spent 18 days in Mater Mothers' Special Care Nursery, and Amelie - born weighing just 1.9kg - spent more than seven weeks receiving around-the-clock care in Mater Mothers' Special Care Nursery and Neonatal Critical Care Unit.

"After spending nearly two months in the hospital with the twins and seeing firsthand the special work they do to care for babies and families, I'm now considering a career change into paediatric or neonatal nursing myself," said Tegan.

They’ve driven a total of 2.1 million kilometres, cared for more than 166,000 babies and – last week – Mater Mothers' Hospital's Homecare program celebrated 30 years of supporting newborns and their families in the comfort of their own homes.💕🩺

From advice on breast feeding to neonatal screening tests and postnatal check-ups, the team of midwives celebrated their milestone with a morning tea before hitting the road again to help mums and dads transition into their new roles of parents and to ensure their babies have the best possible start to life.
