From antenatal classmates to lifelong friends ❤️

These four mums met in antenatal care as part of Mater's Midwifery Group Practice last year.

Together they formed a mothers’ group to support each other through parenting.

"Having others with babies the same age to connect with has been imperative to our mental health," said mothers’ group member Trudi.

"We have completed a baby splash class together and recently all signed up to baby gymnastics 🏊🤸‍♀️

"I envision we will continue to be lifelong friends."

First-time parents Emily and Josh were expecting a spring baby, but little Florence was so excited to meet them that she arrived early.

After Emily's local hospital assessed her to be at risk of preterm birth, Emily was transferred to Mater Mothers' in South Brisbane.

"Once labour kicked off, things happened fast," said Emily.

"I went from eight centimetres to giving birth in just under 20 minutes."

Florence was born at Mater Mothers' Hospital on 11 July at just 27 weeks' gestation.

After Florence was born, Emily was able to give her "the shortest but sweetest tiny cuddle" before she was transferred to Mater Mothers' Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) for around-the-clock care.

"What was a very unexpected end to a week resulted in us meeting our very precious and very loved first baby," said Emily.

Thank you Emily for sharing your family's journey with us 💕

July has been pure joy for families and staff at Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville, after a record-breaking 74 babies were born throughout the month.

Midwifery Unit Manager Rebekah Barrie said the baby boom had smashed the Hyde Park maternity unit’s previous record of 66 babies in a month, set in February 2022.

“We usually have around 50 births a month, so July was an exceptionally busy time for everyone,” Ms Barrie said.

“But it’s been wonderful to welcome so many new babies into the world."
