It doesn’t matter how often I say, prep for parenthood like you prep for birth—I always get messages from new mums saying, "I nailed my birth, but this newborn thing is totally overwhelming!"
And I get it—I felt the same way.
Birth felt like something I could plan for, something with a manual (or at least a checklist). But postpartum? It felt like something I had to just figure out.
I WAS WRONG.
Here are a few simple but essential ways to prepare:
1. The Foundations
Rest & Recovery: How will you prioritise as much horizontal time as possible for at least three weeks?
Food Prep: Plan how you’ll feed yourself and your partner—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for three weeks. Meal trains, batch cooking, Dinner Ladies—figure it out now, so future you isn’t running on toast and coffee.
Conversations: Talk with your partner. What could cause stress? How can they best support you?
2. The Village
You may not need everyone, but have their numbers handy just in case:
📌 Lactation consultant
📌 ABA live chat/helpline
📌 Child nurse phone support
📌 Mother’s group
📌 Your inner circle—the people you can call for help (the ones you’re okay with seeing you topless!)
3. The Plan of Attack
Household chores won’t magically disappear. Get clear on who’s doing what.
💡 Outsource where you can! Instead of baby shower gifts, ask for a cleaner, meal delivery service, postpartum doula, or dog walker.
4. The Deal Breakers
Set boundaries before the baby arrives.
Unannounced visitors? Nope.

Postpartum is HARD. But you can do hard things—and those things are easier with a plan in place.
