🌟 Professional Development Refresher 🌟

Our team recently took part in a hands on PD refresher all about measuring range of motion and using a goniometer.

We revisited how to position and read a goniometer accurately, practiced on each other, and shared tips on recording measurements in a way that works well for everyone.

Refreshing our skills in measuring range of motion is so valuable in a paediatric occupational therapy clinic.

It helps us to:
✨ Track a child’s joint movement over time and see if therapy is making a difference.
✨ Promote increased independence in daily tasks through appropriate assistive technologies.
✨ Identify any movement limitations early, which helps guide treatment planning and referrals.

Keeping these skills sharp means we can give more precise, evidence based support to the kids we work with every day 💛

Did you know? When children listen to music and match their claps to the beat, they are practising how to coordinate what they hear with how their body moves.

This strengthens their ability to focus, wait, and respond at just the right moment.

It might look like a simple game, but it is actually helping build attention, motor planning and turn taking. Next time you play your child’s favourite song, try clapping along together and see if they can keep the beat with you 🎵👏💛

Communiteens Café Pop-Up Fun! 🍰☕

Our Communiteens girls ran a fantastic café over the school holidays. They took orders, made coffees, baked sweet treats and worked together like pros. It was so lovely to see their teamwork, confidence and creativity shine through!

Our OTs and families enjoyed popping in to grab a coffee and check out all the action.

Massive shoutout to Miss Taylor (OT) and Miss Karen (Practice Manager) for their support and supervision. We couldn't have done it without you 💛

Our latest LEGO Juniors group was a huge hit! 🎉 It was a fantastic session where we focused on key developmental skills while having loads of fun:

🕰️ Impulse Control: The children worked on taking turns and waiting patiently, helping them practise self-control and teamwork in a playful way.
💬 Emotional Regulation: Through guided play, we supported the children in recognising and managing their feelings, helping them stay calm and positive when things got tricky.
✋ Fine Motor Skills: Those tiny LEGO bricks were perfect for improving hand strength and coordination while building amazing creations!
🤗 Social Skills: Teamwork was everywhere! From sharing ideas to working together on builds, the children built confidence, friendships, and communication skills.
📚 Following Directions: Whether following a step-by-step guide or listening to instructions, the group practised focus and listening, essential skills for everyday life.

A big well done to all our brilliant builders! 🌟 Your creativity, patience, and teamwork were truly inspiring. We’re so proud of what you created!

✨💇‍♀️ Make Hair-Tying Fun with These Simple Activities! 💇‍♀️✨

Getting the hang of tying hair doesn’t have to be a struggle, it can actually be a lot of fun! With a few creative activities, your child can build the skills they need to tie their own hair, and they won’t even realise they’re learning. Try these fun ideas to get them started:

🗞️ Tearing Paper
How: Let your little one tear strips of paper to practice gripping and pulling. It might sound simple, but it’s great for building those fine motor skills they’ll need for handling hair.
Benefit: Helps strengthen hand muscles and improves control, which is key when tying hair.

🎨 Play Dough Hair Styles
How: Use play dough to create “hair” and practice twisting, pulling, and tying it. It’s a playful way to get familiar with the motions.
Benefit: Builds hand-eye coordination and strengthens finger muscles—perfect for when it’s time to style real hair!

🦸‍♂️ Pretend Play with Dolls
How: Grab a doll or stuffed animal with hair and practice tying it up in a ponytail or braid. Pretend play takes the pressure off and makes it feel like a fun game.
Benefit: Encourages imagination while practising the motions needed for real-life styling.

🧵 Threading & Lacing
How: Use lacing cards or a bit of string and beads to work on threading. It’s great practice for those tiny, precise movements that come in handy for tying hair.
Benefit: Builds fine motor skills and hand coordination, which are key when using elastics.

🔴 Elastic Band Practice
How: Let your child practice using an elastic band to simulate tying up their hair.
Benefit: Helps them get used to pulling and securing, building muscle memory for the real thing.

🦓 Tweezer Games
How: Use tweezers to pick up small objects like pom-poms or beads.
Benefit: Strengthens the pincer grip, which is needed for holding hair sections and elastics in place.

✨ Pro Tip: Make it part of your daily routine, just a few minutes each day. It’ll help your child feel more confident, and soon they’ll be tying their own hair!

What a fantastic day we had with our Teen School Holiday Group last week!

Our BBQ outing was a chance to build social connections, practice communication and teamwork, and grow confidence in a real-life community setting. 🙌

Strong winds meant a change of plans, but the group showed fantastic flexibility and problem-solving, adapting quickly and keeping spirits high.

They worked together to prepare lunch, took turns with cooking and serving, and supported one another with communication and shared decision-making. 🍔🥗
