We’re starting a new series all about using everyday things at home to support your child’s development. You don’t need fancy equipment, just a little creativity and what you already have around the house. 💛

Here are a few simple ideas to try:
🧺 Laundry baskets for pushing, pulling, or sorting clothes to build strength and coordination.
✏️ Paper and crayons for drawing or tracing to strengthen fine motor and pencil control skills.
🧱 Blocks, Lego, or containers for stacking and building to boost imagination and problem-solving.
🥄 Kitchen tools like tongs, spoons, or cups for scooping and pouring to develop hand skills.

Small, everyday moments of play at home can make a big difference in your child’s development 🌟

Continuing Our Professional Development Journey ✨

We’re continuing our learning journey on how to best support teenagers as they navigate this important stage of life. Adolescence can bring new challenges and opportunities, and our team is building on our previous PD to deepen our understanding and strategies.

We’ve been exploring ways to help teens strengthen executive functioning, emotional regulation, and life skills, empowering them to feel more confident, independent, and capable in their everyday lives. 💛

💡 NDIS Updates & OT Learning 💡

Our team recently got together for an NDIS update session to refresh our knowledge and stay up to date with the latest changes around appeals and review pathways. It was a valuable opportunity to make sure we can keep providing families with clear information and confident support throughout these processes.

We discussed how OTs can best support families through:
✨ Change of Circumstance (CoC) – when a participant’s situation changes and this may impact their supports. Examples include: A new diagnosis, Functional regression (e.g., needing extra therapy support), Changes in family structure or carer availability, Applying for new Assistive Technology (AT), Previous supports no longer being effective or funding running out.

🔁 Internal Review – a review completed by the NDIA itself, when a participant disagrees with a decision (e.g., access, supports, plan, or variation).

⚖️ External Review / Tribunal – conducted by the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) if a participant is unsatisfied with the outcome of an internal review.

By understanding these processes in depth, our OTs can provide families with accurate information, realistic timelines, and tailored recommendations throughout their NDIS journey.

A big thank you to OT Miss Maarya for leading such an informative and engaging session! 🌟

Cooking in OT! 🍕

Cooking activities are a fantastic way to build everyday life skills in a fun, hands-on way. Through preparing foods like pizzas, children work on:

👩‍🍳 Meal preparation and kitchen safety
🧼 Hygiene and organisation
🧠 Task planning and sequencing
💪 Fine motor coordination
😋 Trying new foods and building positive food experiences
💬 Engagement, confidence, and independence

Our current favourite food in sessions? You guessed it... pizzas! 🧀🍅

Mazes: More Than Just Lines on a Page ✏️

Mazes might look simple, but they’re an excellent way for children to build key skills that support learning, attention, and everyday tasks. As children navigate their way from start to finish, they’re developing:

✍️ Fine motor and pencil control skills as they strengthen hand muscles and improve precision for writing and drawing.
🧩 Visual perception as they scan, plan routes, and interpret spatial relationships.
🧠 Attention and regulation while practicing focus, patience, and sustained effort to complete a task.
🚦 Impulse control by learning to slow down, think ahead, and resist the urge to rush through.
💪 Task perseverance by building confidence to persist through challenges and finish what they start.

Mazes are fun, engaging, and a great way to learn through play 🌟

👩‍🍳 Little Chefs in action! 👨‍🍳

This week, our amazing little chefs whipped up pizza scrolls, Vegemite twists, and colourful fruit skewers, delicious and full of fun!

Along the way, they practiced important skills like fine motor development, sharing, turn-taking, teamwork, and exploring new textures, tastes, and ingredients in a playful way.

We’re so proud of our creative, confident little cooks!

✨ Wrapping up term 3 ✨

As Term 3 comes to a close, our team has loved running fun holiday group programs with the kids, but that’s not all we’ve been up to!

We also dedicated time to professional development, with this term’s focus on Family Centred Practice.

So, what does this mean in the paediatric OT setting?
💡 Recognising families as key partners in a child’s journey
💡 Supporting parents and carers to feel confident and empowered
💡 Working together to set meaningful goals that fit each child’s daily life
💡 Building stronger outcomes by valuing the knowledge families bring

By deepening our understanding of family centred practice, we continue to ensure our therapy supports not just the child, but the whole family.
