It can be challenging for parents and families of children with disability to take their child to the beach, shops, park etc without fear of them being coming dysregulated, running away or hurting others or damaging property.

As a behaviour practitioner working with kids, adults and families with disabilities, I see this all too often. Parents and families adjust their schedule so that they don’t have to take their child with a disability shopping with them. They fear going to amusement parks, the beach or anyone else in case their child dysregulates and starts hitting other children and adults, start stimming or wander off dangerously into traffic or hiding in large shopping centres.

Unfortunately I also work with adults with disabilities who, as children, were not exposed to public spaces for the above reasons. Now as adults, it’s much harder to teach them these vital skills. The looks the public give a dysregulated adult with a disability are much harsher and judgemental than the looks they give children. Police and or security are often called. Other members of the public try and intervene to ‘help’ the caregiver or support worker but they often make the situation worse.

This situation happened recently with one of my clients. The mother was hospitalised with significant injuries. The child underwent a mental health assessment and was cleared to return home. Child safety/child protective services is already involved with this family.

Mum was too frightened to take her child back home with her due to the risk towards her 18 month old and 2 teenage daughters. Child safety/child protective services was unable to provide any support or respite. Child safety/child protective services has previously blamed the mother for ‘staying’ in a DV relationship and not protecting her children.

NDIS was unable to provide respite. The mother had no choice but to return home with her son and hope that he didn’t escalate again. The mother frequently states that she feels that it’s better not to impose any boundaries or teach her son any independence lest he gets upset and hurts the family.

If you were the mother in this situation, what would you do?
