Falls risk increases with age - but it rarely happens without warning.
As we get older, natural changes occur in muscle strength, reaction time, balance, vision, and bone density. These changes can increase instability, particularly when combined with conditions such as osteopenia or osteoporosis.
When falls occur, the consequences can be significant. Fractures, especially of the hip, wrist, or spine, are common secondary complications. Reduced bone density means even a seemingly minor fall can result in serious injury, hospitalisation, and loss of independence.
The encouraging part is this: falls risk is modifiable.
Targeted, clinically guided exercise can:
→ Improve lower limb strength
→ Enhance balance and proprioception
→ Increase reaction speed
→ Support posture and gait stability
→ Improve confidence in daily movement
Over time, structured strength and balance training can meaningfully reduce the likelihood of falls and help slow functional decline.
At Better by Miles, our Accredited Exercise Physiologists design individualised programs to support safe mobility and long-term independence.
