Introduction to Solids is meant to be fun. It is important to start giving children the opportunity to practice holding, playing and munching food from 6 months but we don't worry about whether baby is actually eating it until 9 months. Coles now stocking grated and sliced Biocheese. This cheese is milk and soy free and has a mild creamy taste. It is coconut based so has lots of fat to provide children with the energy to growth and play.

A reminder that encouraging healthy eating is not the only way to protect our children from becoming overweight. Ensuring appropriate microbiome health by avoiding unnecessary antibiotics and antibacterial cleaners is also important.

Babies are naturally curious and happy to explore new foods while toddlers become wary of foods they are unfamiliar with. It is thought this evolved to protect toddlers as they became more mobile and able to be come across poisonous berries and plants. We can set up children for a lifetime of healthy eating by offering them a wide variety of nutritious food but don’t worry too much whether they actually eat them. Forcing them to eat doesn’t work and if anything may make them less likely to accept these foods in the future.
Parents everywhere deal with picky eaters at one point or another. Our instinct might be to force them to eat, but a new study says that isn't effective.

Paula has always loved food and considers dietetics her vocation. After qualifying as a Dietitian in 2002 (BSc Nutrition and Dietetics, Kings College London, UK) she soon identified that her passion lay in helping children and their families and undertook further study to qualify as a Paediatric Dietitian in 2005/6. She has worked in multi-disciplinary allergy clinics in both the UK and Australia and is a member of ASCIA (Australasian Society for Clinical Immunology and Allergy). Her PhD was awarded by the University of Queensland in 2017 and focused on the effects of breastfeeding and diet on growth and microbiota development in children

Starting solids can be an exciting but daunting milestone for parents. If you are looking for advice you can trust Dr Paula Smith-Brown a PhD qualified Accredited Practising Dietitian is now offering group education sessions on the introduction of solids for only $20 per family at Possums at Grow Medical in Highgate Hill. The next session will be on Saturday 22nd September at 10am.
The session will cover the how, why and when of learning to eat, including:

Prevention of allergies
Tips to prevent choking, and
