Heart healthy protein smoothie bowl👌🏼

See below for the recipe & heart health facts👇🏼

Recipe (makes 1-2 serves, depending how hungry you are!)

➕Banana pieces (1 cup, frozen)
➕Passionfruit (1 cube, frozen)
➕Chobani Greek yogurt, natural light (1/2 cup)
➕Black chia seeds (2 teaspoons)
➕Collagen powder (1-scoop or 12.5 grams) I use the Whole Body Collagen that is made from 100% hydrolysed bovine collagen.
➕Ice (1 cup)
➕Water (1 cup)
➕Top with plain rolled oats (1/3 cup) I toasted mine in the oven on a low heat with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and cinnamon.

The thing I LOVE about this smoothie is that each ingredient benefits your heart health❤️‍🩹

✔️Banana = potassium (helps to reduce blood pressure)
✔️Passionfruit = low glycaemic index fruit (and packs a flavour punch)
✔️Chobani Greek yogurt, natural light = high in protein and very low in saturated fat (0.1g/100g)
✔️Chia seeds = omega-3 fatty acids (helps to boost your HDL cholesterol)
✔️Collagen powder = high in protein to help maintain muscles mass and boosts skin, bone and joint health.
✔️Ice/water = additional hydration
✔️Rolled oats = beta glucans (prebiotic and soluble fibre)

There can be a lot of confusion in the nutrition world when it comes to the best type of milk to consume as part of a healthy diet🥛

As a Cardiac Dietitian my first question would be “what are your health goals?”🤔

If the goal is to either:
1. Increase your satiety🍎
2. Maintain your muscle mass while managing your weight⚖️
3. Increase your muscle mass💪🏻

It may be best to choose a milk that has a higher concentration of protein….

Navigating a nutrition label can be difficult…especially when you are trying to reduce your sodium (salt)🧂

Sodium is often added to foods that have reduced positive sensory properties (e.g. low fat foods)🍽️

Sodium also enhances the palatability of food flavors in products that have a bitter flavor (this increases the perceived sweetness of a food)🍬

Higher sodium is commonly high in foods such as processed meat (sausages, salami, ham, bacon, corned beef, smoked meats), soups, stocks, canned and pickled foods, sauces, spreads, chips, crackers, some bread products and unfortunately……cheese🧀

I’ve taken an example of comparing two healthy whole-grain cracker products to show how sodium content can vary widely👆🏻

Always check the “sodium” part of the nutrition label and compare per 100 grams…📋
