🦓✨ January 31st is International Day of The Zebra! 🦓✨

The zebra is such an important symbol for those with rare conditions like EDS, or even conditions that were thought to previously be rare like hEDS and HSD. It symbolises being the outlier, the poorly understood, the needle in a haystack.

“When you hear hoof beats behind you, don't expect to see a zebra.”

This is the phrase where being a zebra originates from. It's been commonly taught to medical students since the 1940’s, conditioning them to look for the most common disorders, and not ones that are rare, obscure or have odd presentations.

It's a phrase that often follows medical professionals far into their careers, leading them to often dismiss the symptoms and experiences of those who do have rare or misunderstood conditions.

What experiences have you faced as a zebra?

🦓 Maybe you were told your condition was too rare for you to possibly have when searching for answers

🦓 Told your symptoms were all in your head or just anxiety or depression

🦓 Told you were too young, or too old to have your condition

🦓 Spent years searching for answers while being passed between doctors who had no answers

🦓 Were misdiagnosed with other common conditions

🦓 Experienced medical trauma from medical professionals being poorly educated on your condition

Let us know your zebra story and the things you experienced once you discovered you were a zebra.

Shout to all of our strong zebras out there who have overcome such tough obstacles 🦓♥️

At Painslayers, we often see sciatica as a result of pressure on the sciatic nerve. Physiotherapy treatment helps remove the pressure caused by poorly moving spinal joints and any muscular tension in the lower spine that may be present. We use several techniques to treat sciatica, including:
-Spinal mobilisations
-Trigger point therapy
-Massage therapy
-Dry needling
-Stretching any tight muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments
-Correction and re-education of movement and muscle activity

We also advise you on how to change things in your daily routine to minimise pressure and irritation of the sciatic nerve, and provide stretches and exercises to do at home to aid in your recovery. If you are experiencing sciatica, give us a call to book in today! Ph 3278 11186

Sore back? Here's how physio can help!

Did you know that up to 80% of people will suffer from back pain at least once in their lifetime? That’s a lot of us! Most researchers say the actual figure is even higher.

If you have ever suffered from acute or chronic back pain, you’ll know it can be debilitating. However, many people don’t see a Physiotherapist until back pain starts to limit their lifestyle in some way. It may stop you from participating in sport or leisure activities, affect your ability to work or keep you awake at night.

Whatever the cause of back pain, our physiotherapists can help. Physios are trained to assess how people move and why movement patterns are related to pain. We look at range of movement, quality/control and restrictions to movement.

We then explore why this movement is abnormal. Is it a joint problem or a muscle problem? Could it be poor control or weakness? We use this knowledge of biomechanics to retrain and improve your movement and prevent back pain recurrence. To book in now, give us a ring or book in via our website!
