๐Ÿช„ Pure Magic!

๐Ÿ›ถ We built the boats.

๐Ÿ›– Constructed the village.

๐ŸŽฃ And we fed the people.

๐Ÿชต I remember creating miniature cattle yards with my brothers in the bush while waiting for dad.

๐Ÿ—ƒ๏ธ I remember I had a miniature doll I kept in a matchbox with a tissue for a blanket.

๐Ÿซ– I remember having tea parties and making mud pies with my imaginary friend little Janice.

๐Ÿ Thereโ€™s more to eating than putting food in your mouth, chewing and swallowing.

Some kids just have to start here:

๐Ÿ‘€ Can you look at the food?
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Can you smell it?
๐Ÿ–๏ธ Can you touch it?

If trying new food is tricky, start there.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ Explore food. It doesnโ€™t have to be at the dinner table.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Talk about the sensory features food. Wet, dry, crunchy, soft, warm, cold, orange, green, red.

๐Ÿ™Œ Play with food

๐Ÿ˜Š No pressure to eat. Just fun.

๐ŸŒณ Being outdoors naturally encourages relaxation and attention. Can you see what other skills weโ€™re developing?

โค๏ธ Food exploration and play is just one of the skills we work on in our outdoor and Telehealth sessions.

๐Ÿƒ Message me if this speaks to you or youโ€™d like to be supported through tricky life skills with your child.

๐Ÿƒ Outdoors.

๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ Where imaginations run wild.

๐Ÿ™Œ Senses are stimulated.

๐Ÿ”จ Skills are developed without effort.

๐ŸŒˆ And youโ€™re lost in the moment.

๐ŸŒณ Fully present and engaged.

N.B. Iโ€™m afraid the crew of this vessel had to walk the plank ๐Ÿ˜œ

๐ŸŒŸ Equine OT Telehealth style. A Trip to the Vet!

๐Ÿฉบ Our play brought up all sorts of challenges.

๐Ÿ†• Unexpected travel and transitions to a new places and people.

๐Ÿ’ก Strange sights and sounds.

๐Ÿฉน Examination and treatment.

โ“ Does this sound familiar to any experiences your child may have had?

๐ŸŒŸ Through play we can explore relationships, sensory processing, planning and problem solving in a non threatening way without the intensity of focus on the child themselves.

๐Ÿคฉ Some days are just awesome!

๐Ÿ Sessions outdoors really are the bees knees!

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ First up, map makingโ€ฆ. So good to bring our awareness to where we are in the world.

๐ŸŽถ Then making musicโ€ฆ..nothing like finding the right stick for the job.

๐Ÿด And finishing with a lap around the hobby horse cross country courseโ€ฆโ€ฆ living out our horsey dreams in plush. Alas no pic for that adventure. I was catching my breath.

๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ I never would have thought that my speechie friend Katy and I would be working together in Vietnam.

โญ๏ธ We first met and worked together as new grads in the bush and for the next week or so are supporting children and teaching staff at a wonderful organisation called Childrenโ€™s Hope in Action.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ I first found out CHIA a few years back when I supervised a Telehealth student placement for them so itโ€™s been wonderful meeting everyone in person.

โญ๏ธ Theyโ€™re doing amazing work for children with disabilities, health, education, water and housing for disadvantaged families.
Check them out.

๐ŸŽ Meet Patches. Our very first horse. She was blind in one eye. To get on we waited until she was eating and weโ€™d swing a leg over her neck on the blind side, shimmy down and then turn around once on her back. I donโ€™t remember anyone teaching us to do that. We were a bit wild and free to work things out for ourselves. Not a helmet in sight and outdoors most if not all of the day. And patches munched away happily as we crawled all over her.

๐ŸŒณ We have a natural affinity with nature and animals because we are part of the natural world. We are drawn to it. It makes us feel good. This even has a fancy name, the biophilia hypothesis.

๐Ÿ“บ Seems obvious doesnโ€™t it, but itโ€™s not the way we tend to live our lives. Running around in cars, looking at phones or computer screens and the time weโ€™re outdoors we are focused on a goal like getting fit.

๐Ÿ™Œ Iโ€™m absolutely certain that I was drawn to studying and practicing equine assisted therapy for the benefits it can bring for physical and mental health. You can be absolutely present and paying attention to your surroundings and the horses and get the oxytocin kick from connecting with another living creature.

โ“ If you could choose 1 thing to be mindful of when outdoors what would it be?

๐ŸŒณ You could notice the detail in a tree. The bark, the way the branches emerge from the trunk, the shape of the leaves.

๐Ÿ Or perhaps listen for birdsong. Or set a mindfulness timer and when it sounds look out of the window and take a few mindful breaths.
