When people think speechie, they often think of little kids with speech impairments. Rarely does one associate speechie with swallowing difficulties...until they need it!
Swallowing/eating/drinking is so heavily embedded into our lives...

- Catching up with a friend? It will inevitably be for a coffee/lunch/dinner.

- Want to treat yourself? Grab some chocolate or something yummy.

- Something exciting for the kids? Let's all go get icecream!

The second someone has difficulty swallowing, they can no longer participate in most social activities without feeling self conscious.
Swallowing is important. And we speechies do so much work for people with swallowing issues.

Hug your local speechie! We do a lot that you don't see!!

Hi to all :)
Unfortunately I have had to make the hard decision to close SB Speech Pathology until the new year towards the end of January.
I will be in touch with all my regular clients to update each of you regarding this, and will contact those who had appointments scheduled.
I had to have emergency surgery last week and have multiple surgeries scheduled for the next few weeks. I will then need some recovery time after that and a wee little break to spend with family who have been very patient with me these last couple of weeks.
Big apologies to all those waiting to be seen and I am so grateful for everyone's help and understanding.
I will be in touch to schedule appointments for next year when I am able.
Thank you to those who have reached out and made lovely generous offers to help. You are all appreciated and I feel very lucky to work with you all.
Happy Christmas to you all and enjoy your holidays with friends and family x

Hi everyone!! I have some exciting news! Today marks SB Speech Pathology’s 6 month anniversary in Brisbane! It’s a little bit crazy that the business has been open now for 6 months already! Time flies!!
I wanted to tell you all a little bit about what’s been happening in these last 6 months.
So far, we have received 97 new referrals, have completed 52 new assessments and reports, had 323 sessions and 24 discharges.
Interestingly, 90% of my caseload use Auslan as their first language or primary means of communication.
I want to say thank you to everyone for your support. Thank you for talking so positively about the business and for sharing the business name out there in the community.
Thank you to all my clients who make this job so worthwhile.
Thank you for the fun…and the challenges!...but mostly just the fun I get to have with you!

I never thought I would get to combine my two great loves, Speech Pathology and Interpreting/Auslan and for that I am so grateful and feel very blessed.
I’m excited for what the next 6 months bring!
Thank you all again!

Speech Pathologists work with people across a range if different areas. We work with speech, language, swallowing and voice to help people feel more comfortable in themselves and live safely in the community.
And I love it! x

Today is the start of Speech Pathology Week (22-28 August). The week aims to promote the speech pathology profession and how speech pathologists work with the 1.2 million Australians who have communication disability to ensure that ‘communication is everyone’s right’.

My beautiful client's Mother is an indoor plant extraordinaire!! And gifted me a range of her cuttings that she had cultivated as a thank you for working with her daughter.
I'm forever reminded in this job how kind, generous and thoughtful people can be, in spite of their rocky roads and daily challenges.
What a genuine pleasure and honour to work with people like this every day :)
Thank you to all of my clients who make this job meaningful and enjoyable!

We have some exciting news!!! SB Speech Pathology is expanding with the addition of a wonderful new Speech Pathology Assistant!

Abbie Roberts is excitingly joining us to see clients who need more regular therapy than what I alone can provide!

Abbie has such zest and energy when working with her clients and is a really exciting addition to our team. And on top of all her fabulous list of achievements, she has also just signed up to her first Auslan class and has been working with Deaf participants through interpreters for a while now!

See her bio below!

Hi! I am currently a student of the Griffith University Master of Speech Pathology program, and I am committed to becoming a caring and skilled Speech Pathologist. I completed my undergraduate study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, graduating with a Bachelor of Popular Music with Honours. Following this, I completed a Graduate Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy. Over the course of the next four years, I practiced as a vocal coach, where I developed a passion for working with vocalists of all ages, providing individualised teaching and support.

I am currently working as a CrossFit Trainer at CrossFit Unrest where I coach group classes, full of hard-working individuals. I am constantly inspired by their perseverance, and I have seen first-hand how their practice, consistency and dedication can have such a positive impact on their health, and their lives. I am looking forward to combining my love of voice and health within the practice of Speech Pathology.

I love this quote (thanks Brittany for sharing!).
I don't normally share personal information on the business page...but I thought it worthwhile sharing a little about our journey at the moment!
My 2 (almost 3) year old daughter has recently been diagnosed with a mild-moderate hearing loss. At the moment it is a conductive loss and we go back in a couple of months for a sensorineural (cochlear or inner ear) assessment.
Are we worried? NO!! Why? She has had access to language for however long she has had this loss through Auslan and English. We sign and speak in our house and so because of this, our daughter is not behind in her language or speech acquisition.
Does this mean we will do a little more work than we would have otherwise? Yes! haha. The speechie in me can't help but go into speech and language overdrive! But it is not out of worry, rather than a proactive approach to ensure she is not missing important language development!
How lucky are we to have Auslan in our lives and amazing Deaf role models for her to learn from!!
Thanks for letting me share a little of my story with you!!
Sarah xx

Did you know that Speech Pathologists work with people who have difficulty swallowing!?
This was a big part of my job when working in hospitals!
And did you know that typically we can swallow anywhere from 500 to 700 times a day!?
Dysphagia or swallowing problems effects many people for many different reasons!

Swallowing Awareness Day (17 March) is an opportunity to bring attention to swallowing disorders (dysphagia) and to connect people with speech pathologists, the professionals who can help.

Like breathing, swallowing is essential to everyday life. Humans swallow between 500-700 times a day, around three times an hour during sleep, once per minute while awake, and even more during meals.

Swallowing problems can occur at any stage of life. Early identification of dysphagia is very important. If you notice any of signs or symptoms, see your doctor and/or refer yourself directly to a speech pathologist via our website. Learn more about swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) from our fact sheet on swallowing.
