“As the nerves are, in the yogic point of view, the unconscious mind, any breakdown in the nervous system distorts the stability of the mind and leads to fear, despair, doubt and dejection. Practice of yoga on the other hand, keeps the nervous system elastic and build up hope, poise, friendliness, compassion, and gladness.”

Origins of the Modern Yoga Mat

Angela Farmer was a student of BKS Iyengar when he first started teaching yoga in London. In our recent blog, she tells the story of her mission to find a solution to slidey feet in his classes. Angela’s innovation led to the development and manufacture of the first sticky yoga mats. If you look at the images in Light On Yoga there isn’t a mat in sight, but this iconic prop has become synonymous with modern yoga

“May we always be grateful to those who shone in their own light and for their inspiration that gave us the courage to set out on our own path, our own dharma."

Thanks Mia glad you enjoyed the class:)

Does anyone else visit their local Iyengar school while you’re away for work and end up in a 2 minute Urdvha Dhanurasana…

OK, so I didn’t make the whole 2 minutes but I sure tried and the backbends class was exactly what I needed ahead of working at a big conference for 3 days 💪

Thanks to Jamie and the crew from - such a welcoming and lovely bunch!

If you’re ever near make sure you drop in for a class - the studio is only a 10-15min walk and your body and mind will thank you!

Salamba Savasana vs Bhishma Charyasana

The photo at the top depicts Salamba Savasana on seven bricks. The body is parallel to the floor. The practitioner relaxes the muscles that can suspend from the bones when the body is “floating” on the bricks. It is wonderful for extreme fatigue and stress. This is not Bhishma Charayasana. In Bhishma Charayasana, as shown in the bottom photo, the body is slanted, elevating the heart and helps to stimulate the heart to enhance its function. It may be good for conditions of the heart.

Bhishma was the chief of the Kaurava army during the Kurukshetra War in the epic Mahabharata. He lied on a bed of arrows, but rather than dying, he prolonged his life until his choosing, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and endurance, while enduring the great pain and sacrifice, which underscores his dedication to his duties and that physical suffering is secondary to spiritual evolution.

Friday Feed: Adho Mukha Virasana

The pose depicted on top with a bolster between the backs of the thighs and shins sends the buttocks and low back upwards and puts pressure downward on the knee joints. This may be harmful to the knees, especially for older students and those with knee discomfort. Additionally, the space between the vertebrae is compressed and may create tension and hardness in the muscles of the back, including the shoulder, neck, and inside the body cavities. The mind may become agitated.

The photo depicted on the bottom, shows a bolster (a blanket may also be used) positioned between the buttocks and heels. This is needed when there is a gap between the two and/or there is knee discomfort. Filling this gap helps to press the buttocks back and down onto the bolster. The head and hands are raised and supported on blocks to the height of the buttocks. Raising the hands and head, even if the buttocks are touching the heels without support, would be needed for a hyperkyphotic dorsal curvature and/or tight neck and shoulders that causes the head to hang lower than the shoulders.

Anchoring the top of the thighs and buttocks back and down and reaching the arms forward in line to the torso lengthens and spreads the torso, increases the space between the vertebrae of the spinal column and opens the body cavities. The space, spreading, and lengthening is soothing to the body, breath, and mind and creates a positive environment for the practice to follow.
