Australia’s healthcare system is feeling the pressure, and general practice is carrying much of that load. A lot has changed since Medicare began in 1984. More people are living with long‑term conditions, specialist waiting lists have grown, and we now recognise that good health includes mental and social wellbeing, not just physical care.
At Sandstone Healthcare Yeerongpilly, we have been looking closely at how general practice can meet these needs in a better and more sustainable way.
Our focus is team‑based care. Our GPs have interests in areas such as chronic pain, menopause, ADHD, and healthy ageing. They work closely with allied health professionals, pharmacists and nurses who are part of the same care team, not separate from it. Providing care this way takes more time and more coordination, and at the moment Medicare does not fully fund the longer appointments, collaborative planning or additional skills and equipment required. This means there may be some out of pocket costs.
For many people, though, this approach can be more accessible, cheaper and far more complete than navigating multiple specialist referrals on their own.
Innovation in primary care is not always about new technology. Often it is about clinicians working together, building long‑term relationships with patients, and designing care around the person rather than the system.
This is the kind of healthcare we believe in: Health for Good.
