Could Spinal Misalignment Be Affecting Your Performance?

A well-functioning spine and musculoskeletal system plays a key role in how your body moves and performs, especially in sport. When spinal function is affected, it may contribute to issues like reduced range of motion, muscle imbalances, chronic pain, altered posture, and even recurring injuries. These factors can impact performance, coordination, and recovery.

Want to better understand how your spine may be influencing your movement? Call us on (07) 3892 1440

There’s often a gap between public perception and professional practice. While many think chiropractors just “crack backs” or only treat back pain, chiropractors are well versed in the diagnosis and management of many common neuromusculoskeletal presentations utilising multimodal, evidence-informed approach. Chiropractors assess spinal and joint function, support musculoskeletal health, provide personalised care (including exercise advice, varying techniques) and lifestyle guidance. They work closely with other healthcare professionals and always tailor care to the individual.

Do you feel tight through your neck or shoulders after scrolling on your phone or working on your laptop 🤔

You're likely experiencing what's commonly called Tech Neck — a postural strain caused by looking down at screens for long periods 📱

This issue is becoming more widespread and can have a lasting effect on how your spine feels and functions. If left unmanaged and uncorrected, these effects can become permanent.

Why it happens?
It’s usually the result of forward head posture from long hours using digital devices, combined with less-than-ideal ergonomics at work, home, or school 🧑‍💻

Signs to watch for 👇
🔹Stiffness or pain in the neck and shoulders
🔹Tension headaches
🔹Tight upper back muscles
🔹Limited neck range of motion
🔹Noticeable shifts in posture over time

Ways to support your spine:
👉 Keep screens at eye level whenever possible
👉 Sit tall with your shoulders relaxed and feet grounded
👉 Pause and stretch every 20–30 minutes
👉 Ensure your workspace is set up to support good posture
👉 Be mindful of device use during downtime

If these symptoms sound familiar, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to ignore them. At Yeronga Chiropractic, we support patients with postural-related issues like tech neck through tailored care focused on spinal alignment, joint mobility, and functional movement.

Colder Days, Sore Backs? Here’s Why ❄️
It’s common to notice back pain becoming more intense in winter — and there’s a reason for it.

When temperatures drop, the muscles supporting your spine are more likely to tighten. Combined with reduced physical activity, this can place extra load on the joints and discs in your back.

What may be happening:
🔹Spinal joints stiffen with inactivity and cold exposure
🔹Muscle tension increases around the lower back
🔹Poor posture indoors leads to compression in the lumbar spine
🔹Old spinal issues may become more noticeable

If your back feels stiffer or sorer this season, you're not alone — but you don’t have to put up with it. Practical ways to support your spine in winter 👇
✅ Stay warm — cold muscles are more prone to tightness
✅ Move frequently — gentle activity keeps joints mobile
✅ Avoid long periods of sitting without posture resets
✅ Chiropractic adjustments can help restore motion and reduce tension

At Yeronga Chiropractic, we support spinal health through all seasons. Regular care during winter can help reduce stiffness, improve mobility, and keep your spine functioning at its best.

Jaw pain and stiffness can occur just like any other joint. The muscles attaching to the jaw, such as
the masseter, pterygoids and temporalis all act to help open and close the mouth. If you are
clenching or grinding your teeth at night, you are likely over working these muscles, just like if you
trained biceps every day at the gym!
You can also get mal-positioning of the temporomandibular joint. You may notice that when you
open and close your mouth your jaw doesn’t move symmetrically, it feels stiff or painful, or maybe
you hear a ‘clunk’.
Chiropractic care can assist in releasing the tight muscles, mobilizing the temporomandibular joint as
well as treating other areas such as the neck which may be correlating to the jaw pain.

Does this sound like something you are experiencing? Call Yeronga Chiropractic today!
We’ll help you feel better, move better and get back to your best.

Chiropractic tools play a key role in enhancing treatment:

Activator
- An activator is a spring loaded instrument used as an alternative to manual adjustments. It delivers a high speed, controlled force to a localized area with low force. This tool is typically used for people in a very acute stage of a condition, for pediatric patients or for elderly patients with osteoporosis

Blocks
- The blocks are a wedge shaped cushioned block that is used in certain positions under a patients pelvis/hips. This can aid in mechanically repositioning the pelvis as the muscles and tendons relax and stretch to an optimal state. They can also be used to position you into a flexed or extended position to take pressure off the low back. Your chiropractor will assess your pelvis and leg length to determine the appropriate position for the blocks.

Drop piece
- Many chiropractic tables, including the ones we have here at Yeronga Chiropractic, have segments that lift up and drop down. When placed at the tension, this can be a lower force adjustment technique used for patients in acute pain, who have lower bone density or don’t like manual adjustments! The table drop pieces allow for controlled adjustments with mimeses force through the joints.

Speeder board
- The speeder board or extremity drop piece is a smaller version of the chiropractic table drop pieces. This is a great low force tool that allows chiropractors to still deliver localized, specific adjustments to joints. Typically, this tool is used to treat shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and ankles but it is also used frequently in pediatric chiropractic for low force treatment options.
