Wishing you a happy Valentine’s Day — at BNC we know that what’s good for your heart (especially exercise and healthy eating) is good for your brain - so we hope you find a way to look after both today ❤️

Today is Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Awareness Day!

FND can include a range of symptoms such as limb weakness, tremors, or cognitive issues. These symptoms are thought to be related to an issue with how the brain is functioning, rather than being caused by damage to the brain’s structure from an injury or illness – think of it as a software issue, not a hardware issue.

Management of FND usually involves seeing a multidisciplinary team to fully understand the symptoms you are experiencing, rule out any other diagnoses, and identify your strengths and weakness to help guide your rehabilitation.

Head to https://fndaustralia.com.au/resources/educational-videos.html to see educational videos from FND Australia explain what FND is, how it is diagnosed, and current approaches to treatment

Much of what we know about how the brain functions has come from studying the effects of certain types of injuries or damage to the brain. Take for example the famous case of Patient HM, who underwent an experimental brain surgery in an attempt to stop his epileptic seizures. At the time, not much was known about the function of the parts of the brain that were removed in the surgery. His seizures significantly improved, but Patient HM was left with severe amnesia. While he could remember events from his life prior to the surgery, he could not form new memories. For instance, he was unable to recall if he had met someone just moments earlier. His case laid the foundations for what we now know about how memory works, and the specific parts of the brain responsible for learning and remembering different types of information.

When we talk about love, we usually talk about the heart. This Valentine’s Day, we’re giving credit where credit’s due and putting the attention back on the brain. What happens in the brain when we fall in love, and how does this change over the course of a long-term relationship? Check out this graphic from the American Psychological Association for a summary of how love changes the brain (or how the brain changes love!) and read the full article below for more:
