As both an engineer and an artist, Kristy-Ann brings a unique perspective to our Arts in Health program at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane. With a lifelong passion for birds and a love of bold colours, Kristy-Ann's paintings help brighten up the halls of our hospital.

Art has always been a significant part of Kristy-Ann's life. Her mother Anne, also a valued artist in our Arts in Health program, inspired regular drawing, painting and creating throughout her children's lives.

"Mum and I still paint together regularly, and I feel blessed that we can do that," says Kristy-Ann.

"I hope my artwork brings colour and joy into the hospital, because I believe that surrounding ourselves with bright, uplifting art can genuinely lift our mood and outlook. In a place where people may be facing illness, stress or uncertainty, art can offer comfort, reflection, or even escape. It gives shape to feelings we can’t always express with words and allows us to reconnect with something deeper, bringing comfort, hope, and a sense of connection."

"I’m delighted to be able to bring my art into the hospital to bring some of the joy and colour of the ‘Outside In’ where it can hopefully make a difference."

Thank you Kristy-Ann for enriching the hospital environment, for patients, visitors and staff alike.

This Pain Week, we’re sharing the story of Navy veteran Ashley Semmens - who lived with chronic pain for over a decade after a bomb blast in Afghanistan.

With support from pain medicine specialist Dr Ramsey Jabbour at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, Ashley underwent a targeted treatment called radiofrequency ablation - and for the first time in years, found meaningful relief.

Ashley then went on to achieve a world-first: crossing the English Channel swimming on his back using only his legs.

His story is a powerful reminder that evidence-based pain care can transform lives.

Congratulations to our nurses on Ward GB at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside who continue to receive positive feedback for the care and attention they provide our patients. Here is some of the beautiful feedback that has been left by recent patients and visitors:

"The whole experience with all the staff from start to end was an amazing help and support, from the lady walking me to the office to get checked in, to the lady helping me get ready for surgery, to the bloke pushing me in to the surgery room, to all the wonderful doctors and nurses who carried out the procedure, to all the wonderful nurses who cared for me in recovery, all the people who cooked me food and brought me food and changed my bed sheets, and everyone else I missed. I couldn't ask for better people to have helped and supported me and if I could thank everyone one of them again I would. Thank you so much."

"Everyone working at St Vincent Private Hospital Northside, from surgery staff to nurses, restaurant food delivery and cleaners were 100%. The nurse doing my initial check-in was extremely helpful. The backshift nurses were also extremely warm and friendly. On discharge, my nurse explained everything I needed to know and stayed with me until family arrived with transport. No one could have done more than she did and I was very impressed with her knowledge and professionalism."

Well done to our nurses for this well-deserved praise. We thank you for your commitment to providing better and fairer care, always.

Did you know that Chronic Pain impacts 3.4 million Australians?*

Today marks the beginning of National Pain Week. Run by Chronic Pain Australia, Pain Week is an opportunity to remind all those within our community the social isolation that pain can create. We understand that chronic pain can significantly impact daily life. This week, we are committed to highlighting the importance of understanding, managing, and treating chronic pain effectively.

Persistent or chronic pain is defined by Chronic Pain Australia as long-lasting pain that goes on for more than three months, or past normal tissue healing time.

St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane is one of the largest providers of pain management services in south-east Queensland. We have been helping patients living with chronic pain conditions for more than 10 years, working closely with them and their loved ones to help them gain confidence and skills to manage their pain and achieve their goals.

Our pain management services include interventional pain procedures and rehabilitation. Find more information about our pain services at: https://www.svph.org.au/hospitals/brisbane/pain-services

Meet Josh, a Registered Nurse in the Day Procedure Endoscopy Unit and the Post Anesthetic Care Unit's main theatre at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside.

Josh began his graduate program at St Vincent's in February 2024 and has continued on as a registered nurse, and valued member of the St Vincent's family.

"I really love the diversity in my role! Every patient procedure is different from the next, so I am continually learning about different conditions and procedures," says Josh.

"On any given day I could be working in admissions, procedural rooms or in recovery! Each day is a little different to the next which keeps my job interesting and fresh."

Thank you Josh, for providing an insight into your role at St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside. Our nurses are truly the heart of our hospital. We're grateful for the care, skill, and kindness you bring to our patients, always.

Meet Anne Wood, a talented local artist whose artwork features at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside as part of our Arts in Health "Outside In" program.

From a young age, Anne has been inspired by the artwork in her life, particularly in the way it impacted her mother. Hoping to move people similarly, Anne's work captures the magic of a simple moment. She likes to challenge herself with a variety of subject matter that encourages her to try new techniques and continue to improve.

"Art has a unique ability to take us out of ourselves, it draws us into a world beyond the every day to a place of imagination, beauty, and meaning. Engaging with art reminds us that we’re not alone, and in doing so, it uplifts our spirits and opens space for healing," says Anne.

As a longtime artist and mother of two, Anne enjoys sharing her love of creation with her children and now, grandchildren. Her daughter Kristy-Ann (KADuffy Art) has inherited her mother's love for art and is involved in the Arts in Health program herself. Check in next week, to hear more about Kristy-Ann's work.

Thank you, Anne, for sharing your talent and love for art with our patients, families and visitors.

'Outside In' is a program run by St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside and Brisbane where local artists are invited to showcase their work throughout our hospitals, providing patients with an escape from the clinical environment and a connection to the outside world. All purchases of artwork exhibited in 'Outside In' support these artists, and help us to grow and sustain our Arts Program through a 20% commission.

St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside has launched its annual artwork exhibition in celebration of 2025 NAIDOC Week! Titled "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy", this year's exhibition showcases artwork from various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from within the local community.

De Gillett Cox BFA is an established artist who has chosen to display 14 of her artworks within our hospital. Living on the banks of Wynnum Creek, many of these works depict landscapes with watercourses, and feature patterns and mark-making that are derived from stitching- thread into fabric, a practice that De says has two meanings to her.

"One is the notion of stitching together the clues of my identity from all their various sources like my maternal Great Grandmother, and Great Uncle Charkey Collins, who lived with First Nations people on Minjerribah for many years," says De.

"The other is that as a left-handed child in the 1960s, I was punished at school for using my left hand, especially for sewing class. I’d like all those teachers to see the work I create with my left hand these days and make them apologise!"

These works have been on display since 7th July. We encourage all those within the St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside community to pay a visit to this wonderful exhibition on display.

Welcome back to Fiona Olsen, as she rejoins her role as a Clinical Informatics Manager for the next six months at St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside.

With 40 years of experience at St Vincent's Health Australia, Fiona has been a valuable asset to the St Vincent's community since she joined the St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane team in 1985.

We no doubt that she will be a great asset to our teams over the next six months.

This NAIDOC Week, we love to see our teams sporting the St Vincent's cultural uniform, featuring an original artwork that represents the land on which St Vincent's Private Hospital Brisbane and Northside stands.

Thanks to the hard work of our Meanjin Reconciliation Action Committee, these beautifully designed cultural uniforms can be worn by members of our team. This artwork concept was developed by Aboriginal artist Jenny Kent together with our dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander team during a workshop held in late 2023.

The artwork has specific ties to the Chermside and Kangaroo Point hospital locations, with rivers flowing to the ocean, water holes, native animal tracks, Moreton Bay fig and eucalyptus trees. The hospitals’ values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence are also a central focus of the work.
