Australia’s worst whooping cough (Pertussis) outbreak in over 30 years.
Last year, Australia recorded over 57,000 cases of whooping cough, the highest number since records began in 1991—and the surge continues into 2025, with already more than 14,000 cases reported. Children and families in Queensland are seeing rising numbers along with regions like WA’s Kimberley and South Australia.
Whooping cough is highly contagious and can be life-threatening for babies and young children, despite being vaccine-preventable. Immunity fades over time, and waning vaccination coverage, especially post-COVID, means everyone needs to stay on top of their boosters.
If you’re pregnant, caring for a newborn, or simply want reassurance, please talk to one of our GPs. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect your child and the vulnerable members of the community.
