Have you heard the word 'Pacemaker' but not sure what it actually does?

Essentially it helps your heart beat at a steady, healthy pace by sending tiny electrical signals when things slow down or get out of rhythm.

There are a few different types, the most common are: 👇

👉 Single chamber pacemakers send signals to just one part of your heart - usually the bottom chamber. They’re often used when your heart is beating too slowly or missing beats.

👉 Dual chamber pacemakers help both the top and bottom chambers of your heart work together, keeping everything in sync. These are often used when the heart’s natural signals aren’t getting through properly

So, who might need one?

❌ If your heartbeat is too slow
❌ If you feel dizzy or faint because of rhythm problems
❌ If your heart’s electrical system isn’t working as it should
❌ Or if you have certain types of heart failure

A piece of RFDS history just came home! This medical chest from 1958 was recently found on a property outside Lightning Ridge and returned to us by the new landowner (who sadly reported no opals inside).

Take a look at some of the "old school" treatments from 67 years ago:
- Dover's Powder (o***m mixture) for colds and fevers
- Omnopon 'Tubunic' (morphine mixture) for pain relief
- Dettol antiseptic (still going strong!)
- Quinine salts for malaria prevention and cramps

It's incredible to see how far medical treatments have evolved while our mission remains the same - bringing vital healthcare to remote communities across NSW.
