Men’s mental health matters—because staying silent is no longer strength.

I know this firsthand. After my fourth heart procedure in 2016, I was diagnosed with chronic depression and suicidal ideation. I had a plan—and I told my partner I didn’t want to be here anymore. What followed were doctors, psychologists, and anti-depressants... but still, I was struggling.

I’d hit burnout, carrying the silent weight of anxiety and trying to hold it all together alone. Then I came across the term self-sabotage and thought, what the hell does that mean? That question led me to NLP—simple, powerful mindset tools that created real change.

But it wasn’t until I experienced breathwork that everything clicked. In that moment, I realised: We already hold the power. We just need to know the how—and the why.

This Men’s Health Week, I’m sharing that journey in “The Path to Empowerment”—a workshop for men ready to breathe deeper, think clearer, and reconnect with their true strength.

Why Breathing Matters More Than You Think!

* People with asthma typically breathe 10–15 liters per minute, far above the healthy average of 4–6 liters.
* This over-breathing worsens airway constriction, feeds into the asthma cycle, and increases anxiety, fatigue, and poor sleep.
* Functional breathing retrains your biochemistry (CO₂ sensitivity), biomechanics (diaphragm use), and cadence (breath rate)—the three dimensions of better breathing.

Clinical Evidence

A 12-week clinical trial in Australia, in the 1990's, found that Buteyko Breathing resulted in:

✅ 70% reduction in asthma symptoms
✅ 90% reduction in need for rescue medication
✅ 49% reduction in steroid inhaler use

Buteyko Breathing Method Control Pause (CP), what is it?

"The length of a comfortable breath-hold, measured after a normal exhalation, without any force, until the first definite desire to breathe."

What's your Control Pause? Try the Control Pause now!

Control Pause Test:

Sit upright
Nasal breathe calmly until relaxed
Inhale silently, exhale silently - normal breaths
Lightly pinch your nose after an exhale and record the time to your first definite desire to breathe.
Resume normal silent breathing through the nose.

Note: This is not a major breath-hold test

Your Control Pause could be 2-3 seconds or it could be much higher towards 20 seconds. What was yours?

This is one of four baseline tests i perform to gauge your breathing patterns, your level of breathlessness and your tolerance to CO2.

Increasing your Control Pause will increase your breathing capacity and efficiency.
