Steve attended the Sydney Spinal Symposium, a fantastic event bringing together spine pain researchers and clinicians from across Australia.

His research — “Association between clinician characteristics and the effectiveness of interventions for low back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis” — was selected for a poster presentation. 👏

A great day spent sharing ideas, learning, and connecting with colleagues passionate about improving spine care. 🧠

What’s Laura been up to?

1️⃣Laura was recently named one of 16 researchers to be listed as a CARL fellow. This has lead to her recently travelling to Denmark to assist in research to further progress the field of Chiropractic and musculoskeletal health.

2️⃣She’ll next head to Switzerland for a quick trip to further convene with researchers there.

3️⃣She has also been involved locally with a research study ConnecTBack trial aiming to integrate GP and allied health care integration into the management of low back pain. The study attempts to improve patient outcomes, save costs and improve the health system whilst reducing the burden on GP’s.

Busy times for her currently all whilst managing her case load at Trident.

Keep an eye out for her presentation on adolescents and spinal pain in the coming months.

✅ Deliver confident, clear, evidence-based messages to children and families that cut through misinformation.

Which is Better?

When it comes to recovery, tools like ice baths and compression boots often steal the spotlight, but sleep remains unmatched in its benefits. Here’s why.

💤 Sleep Repairs Your Body
Deep sleep triggers the release of growth hormone, essential for muscle repair and recovery. Research in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism shows that most of this hormone is produced during slow-wave sleep—something no gadget can replicate.

🧠 Sleep Sharpens Your Mind
Performance isn’t just physical—it’s mental. Sleep improves reaction time, focus, and decision-making, as highlighted in a 2007 study in Sleep. Whether you’re on the field or in the gym, mental sharpness gives you an edge.

🔥 Sleep Reduces Inflammation
Poor sleep increases systemic inflammation, while quality rest helps regulate it (Brain, Behavior, and Immunity). Unlike ice baths, which offer localized effects, sleep reduces inflammation throughout the entire body.

⚡ Sleep Restores Energy
During sleep, your body replenishes glycogen stores, which fuel endurance and strength. Studies in Sports Medicine (2014) emphasise that this energy recovery is critical for high-performance athletes.

The Takeaway

While ice baths and compression boots can help, sleep is the gold standard for recovery. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality rest to rebuild muscles, sharpen your mind, and reduce inflammation—naturally.

Orthosports update 2024 📚

We heard from the Orthosports orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians. They discussed the latest treatment options for common orthopaedic conditions such as meniscus tears, hip arthritis, radicular back pain, thumb sprains and shoulder instability.

Key takeaways 🔑

🏋️‍♂️ Exercise programs tailored to hip arthritis can improve functional outcomes (Moseng et al 2020)

💪🏼 Do not use synthetic grafts for ACL reconstruction. Hamstring, patellar or quadriceps grafts are preferred.

💉 Don’t inject corticosteroids into tendons

✅ Prehabilitation (before surgery) helps to increase muscle mass, strength and coordination before total knee replacements

🏃‍♀️Degenerative, partial radial and oblique meniscus tears can respond well to rehab (Noorduyn et al 2022)

🎉HUUUGE ANNOUNCEMENT!

We are extremely proud of our very own Laura Montgomery who recently had her systematic review published in the

Laura has been working tirelessly over the past few years and is in the final stages of her PhD.

Her review focuses on understanding whether sedentary behaviour (sitting) causes spinal pain in kids. The results might come as a surprise.

It is classed as one of the highest levels of research and to be published in the world leading British Journal of Sports Medicine is a huge accomplishment.

The article is free to open access and is linked in our bio.
