Do you work in children’s education and care (CEC)? Is your service allergy aware? 🧩🧡

An allergy aware approach is recommended in the National Allergy Council Best Practice Guidelines for Anaphylaxis Prevention and Management in CEC. Allergy aware CEC services (including long daycare, family daycare, outside school hours care and vacation care) work with families in many ways to lower the risk of a child with allergies having an allergic reaction. If an allergic reaction happens while the child is at the CEC service, it will be managed well.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆

The Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) recommends offering babies a variety of foods, as part of family meals to provide a nutritious diet.

Some parents choose to use commercial food allergen starter packs for babies. These products are unnecessary and costly if the common allergy causing foods are regularly included in family meals.

If you do choose to use commercial food allergen starter packs, ASCIA recommends offering well cooked egg rather than egg from an allergen starter pack. This is because well cooked egg is less likely to cause an allergic reaction.

The publication of these agreed terms is an important step towards more consistent and accurate drug allergy reporting in electronic health records.

Do you work in children’s education and care? Do you know how to use spill kits to prevent accidental contact with food allergens? 🪣

Cleaning up food and other spills quickly prevents children with food allergies coming into contact with the food they are allergic to. Having a spill kit available in each space means that all equipment needed for a quick cleanup is readily available.

We are saddened by the loss of Dr Katie Allen, who has been a long-time champion for people living with allergic disease. Over many years, Katie has been involved in the development and implementation of the National Allergy Strategy and in her political role, supported the Parliamentary Inquiry into Allergies and Anaphylaxis which led to the establishment of the National Allergy Council (a partnership between Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia & Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy) and the National Allergy Centre of Excellence.

We send our heartfelt condolences to her family and all who were fortunate to have known her.
