Eating disorders are common in athletes, especially those participating in weight-sensitive (e.g. boxing), aesthetic (e.g. gymnastics), and gravitational sports (e.g. long jump).

Typically, symptoms of eating disorders occur due to the desire to achieve (& often maintain) a sport-specific body type or a specific weight.

As a result of disordered eating in athletes, metabolic rate decreases, decisions, problem solving & regulating emotions become harder, symptoms of anxiety & depression increase, the risk of illness & injury (& recovery time) increases, and overall performance recovery time is longer.

All of which can influence how well someone competes in their sport.
