Two champions. Two sports. One team.

Athletics and swimming have delivered nearly 80 percent of Australia’s Paralympic Games medals. It’s been 16 years since an athlete from either sport carried the flag at the Opening Ceremony.

That will change at Paris 2024.

Thank you to the Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn for hosting the announcement of our Paralympic Games flag bearers.

“Mum always said she would continue to care for Dad until she couldn’t do it any longer.”

Deanne’s father, Denis, was diagnosed with dementia in 2015.

Deanne’s mother, Annette, became the sole carer for Denis at their home until she experienced her own health concerns.

“In July 2022, Mum was admitted to hospital. She was diagnosed with heart failure. Doctors were urging us to consider full-time care for Dad, given Mum's health,” Deanne said.

“Dementia Australia took my call the day we moved Dad into full time care, and they could hear just how heartbroken I was. The support that day and their reassurance that we had done all we could was significant.”

It can be difficult to decide if it’s time for a loved one to move into residential care. The decision can come with a lot of mixed emotions.
