Our West Heidelberg Community Legal (WHCL) service appeared in Parliament of Victoria this morning, as part of an inquiry into the redevelopment of Melbourne’s public housing towers.

Our Principal Lawyer Stephanie, alongside Inner Melbourne Community Legal's (IMCL) Managing Lawyer for Tenancy and Housing Louisa, stressed the need for residents' rights to return to public housing, if they wish to do so, following the redevelopment of their estates.

Both WHCL and IMCL are partners that form the The Social Housing Legal Program - a service delivering specialist legal advice and representation services to public and community housing renters across Melbourne.

Small beginnings to benefit local people - we've been serving our communities since 1975! This week's goes back down memory lane to when our services first started...

📆1975 - West Heidelberg Community Centre opened and Brunswick Community Health Centre opened.
📆1976 - West Heidelberg Community Legal Centre opened and medical services commenced at West Heidelberg.
📆1979 - Both services expanded to include physiotherapy, podiatry and dietary groups, among many others!

We've kicked off "Opening the School Gate" - a free after-school program helping local girls get active! Starting last term, female students got to choose their preferred sport, boosting engagement from day one!

In , 17 girls joined a basketball program led by Helping Hoops and Coburg Basketball Association, with equipment support from Basketball Victoria. Early survey results show:
• 94% feel more confident playing basketball
• 82% are more motivated to be active

In , 26 girls are taking part in Miniroos Soccer, delivered in partnership with Football Victoria. Score!

We've been awarded the North Western Melbourne PHN contract to provide new Neighbourhood Care Team Services - care that will work alongside local GPs in the Hume region to manage the complex health and social needs of our community.

The collaboration will mean that we can improve health outcomes for individuals for the next two years. We’re excited to see the Neighbourhood Care Team at selected Hume GP clinics over the coming few months!
