🔥 Moxibustion & TCM Benefits 🔥

No, they're not Ci**rs! These are Moxa Sticks.
Moxibustion (moxa) is a gentle Traditional Chinese Medicine technique using warmed mugwort to support circulation, ease pain, reduce blood stagnation and boost your body’s natural energy. It can be especially helpful for period pain, endometriosis related pain, digestive support, and warming the body during colder months.

Curious about how moxibustion could support your health?

Stress can sneak up on you—and it affects everything from your digestion to your sleep. Here are 3 quick relaxation tools you can try right now:

🧘‍♀️Deep belly breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6) – Even just a few rounds can calm the nervous system.
🧘‍♀️Gentle stretching or yoga – A few mindful movements can release tension and help energy flow more freely.
🧘‍♀️A warm bath with Epsom salts – Magnesium + warmth = relaxation magic.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start, I’d love to help you find stress relief that works for you.

👀What I’m Seeing in the Clinic Lately👀

As the seasons shift, I’ve been noticing some common patterns in clinic—and I thought it might resonate with some of you too:

🔄 Hormonal imbalances – Mood swings, irregular cycles, fatigue… these can all pop up when our internal rhythms get thrown off by seasonal changes.

🛡️ Lowered immunity – I’m seeing more people feeling run down, catching colds easily, and taking longer to bounce back.

This time of year is a gentle reminder to tune in, slow down, and give your body a little extra support—whether that’s nourishing seasonal foods, acupuncture, herbs, or just permission to rest.

If you’ve been feeling a bit off lately, you’re not alone. Let’s work together to bring things back into balance.

🌿 NAIDOC Week 2025 | 6–13 July 🌿

This NAIDOC Week, we honour and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2025 theme, “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud”, calls us all to listen deeply and stand alongside First Nations people as they continue to share stories, culture, and resilience.

At Northside Natural Health, we acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land we work and gather on, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

May this week encourage us all to learn, reflect, and walk gently on Country.

🤧✨ How I Stave Off a Cold ✨🤧

When I feel that first little tickle in my throat or a hint of fatigue creeping in, I know my body’s asking for some extra care. Here’s what I do to stay one step ahead:

😴 Rest early – I don’t wait until I’m fully sick. If I’m feeling run down, I take that day off and give my body time to recover.
🥣 Stick to warm food and drinks – No smoothies or cold salads. I opt for soups, teas, and cooked meals to support my digestion and immune system.
🌿 Boost Vitamin C & D – And I lean into warming herbs like ginger, garlic, and cinnamon to help the body fight off those early signs of illness.

Our bodies always give us early warning signs. The trick is learning to listen—and responding with care 💛

🌬️ Why I Always Recommend Keeping Your Neck Covered 🌬️

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we believe that the nape of the neck—specifically the area called the Wind Gate—is a vulnerable point where external pathogens like Wind, Cold, and Damp can enter the body.

I often remind my clients to keep this area protected, especially during cold or windy weather. Here’s why:

🌀 Wind is the “spearhead” of illness
In TCM, Wind is often the carrier for other pathogens like Cold or Heat. It tends to strike quickly—bringing on chills, a stiff neck, headaches, or the first signs of a cold.

🧣 The neck and upper back are more exposed
These areas have less natural insulation, which makes it easier for external factors to “invade” if you’re not properly covered.

🥶 Prevention is everything
I always suggest wearing a scarf or high collar in cooler weather—and as much as I love a cute midriff, keeping your lower back and kidney area warm (especially on breezy days) helps protect your body’s natural defenses (Wei Qi) and can go a long way in preventing illness.

Looking after the small things—like covering your neck—can make a big difference in how resilient you feel day to day.

🌿 Back from the NT – Appointments Now Open! 🌿

I’m back from an amazing hike (Type 2 fun...google it...I had no idea!!!!!!) in the Northern Territory and am now available for appointments again. Thank you for your patience while I took some time to recharge.

Getting out into nature is an amazing elixir for my soul, despite it not always being easy and often being not only physically but mentally challenging. Whilst it was the heat that was challenging in Nitmuluk, now I am back in chilly Melbourne, its the cold that can make me feel unmotivated and a bit stuck.
However you do it, I recommend getting out and connecting with nature, whether its at the creek, the park or your own backyard and gently moving your body to support your mental and physical well being.
Looking forward to seeing you back in the clinic soon!

Warmly,
Kylie

🌿 What Does Your Acupuncturist Actually Mean? 🌿

If you’ve ever had a session with me and heard me say something like “you’ve got some dampness” or “this looks like wind,” you’re not alone in wondering what that actually means!

Traditional Chinese Medicine has its own unique language, and while the terms can sound a bit quirky at first, they help us understand what’s really going on beneath the surface.

Here’s how I usually explain a few of the common ones:

🌧️ Dampness – This feels like heaviness or sluggishness in the body. It might show up as bloating, brain fog, fatigue, or phlegm. Sometimes it can also relate to things like cysts or fibroids.
💨 Wind – Not the digestive kind! In TCM, wind causes symptoms that move or come on suddenly—like a shifting headache, itchy rash, or acute neck pain.
🔥 Heat – More than just fever. It can look like inflammation, irritability, red or hot skin, night sweats, or even bad breath.
❄️ Cold – This might mean your pain improves with warmth, you feel stiff, or your digestion is a bit slow.

I know it can sound unusual, but these concepts give me a way to piece together your symptoms and choose the right treatment to bring your body back into balance.

🌸 Period Pain? Let’s Talk. 🌸

Do cramps wipe you out for days? It doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are some simple, natural ways to ease period pain and support your cycle:

🌿 Warm it up – A heat pack on your belly or lower back helps relax muscles and improve blood flow.
🥣 Avoid cold – Cold drinks and raw foods can increase stagnation and make cramps worse.
🧘‍♀️ Gentle movement – Stretching, walking, or yoga supports circulation and helps Qi move more freely.
⚡ TENS machine – Gentle electrical pulses block pain signals and stimulate endorphin release.
🫖 Herbs & acupuncture – TCM offers powerful tools to rebalance your cycle and reduce pain over time.
💤 Rest – Your period is your body’s cue to slow down and honour your energy.
🐮 Limit cow’s dairy – Dairy may increase prostaglandins, which cause stronger uterine contractions and more pain.

Menstrual pain isn’t something you have to “just live with.” It’s a sign your body is asking for support—and there are so many ways we can help.

🌿 What Is Castor Oil? 💧

Castor oil is a thick, plant-based oil extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. Used for centuries in traditional medicine, it’s well-known for its healing, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying qualities.

✨ Rich in ricinoleic acid, castor oil may help:
🔄 Boost circulation
🔥 Soothe inflammation
💧 Support lymphatic flow

It’s most often used topically as part of a castor oil pack—applied to the lower abdomen with heat to help with period pain, sluggish digestion, and detox support.

Bonus: It’s not just for period pain! Castor oil can help with a variety of pain and stagnation anywhere in the body.

💡Avoid during menstruation, pregnancy, or over broken skin.
Curious how to start using castor oil safely and effectively? Let’s chat!
