This is Joanne Elphinston

An elite performance, movement & rehabilitation consultant. A highly respected international lecturer, physiotherapist & author. And a bloody beautiful human.
-
I spent the day with her yesterday at her “Giving Them Wings - Upper Limb Rehab Reimagined” workshop.
-
It was a world away from traditional, mainstream shoulder rehab.
-
Which, to be honest, I sometimes found difficult because it revealed where my gaps were.
-
Scapula setting & theraband exercises are not the solution.
-
Scapula retraction & activation of serratus anterior are not the solution.
-
Global (whole body) integration is the only solution for long lasting shoulder health.
-
(Which may or may not include some therabands & serratus anterior activation by the way, they just shouldn’t be the whole picture).
-
The only way a shoulder can cope with such high & diverse loads is that if it’s CONNECTED to a well integrated body.
-
I.e. If your lower & central zones (pelvis & trunk) are off balance then the foundation of your upper zone (shoulders) will always be compromised.
-
No amount of scapular stability can match an unstable foundation.
-
Strong foundation, THEN shoulder rehab. Otherwise we’re rehabbing on a house of cards.
-
It makes sense, right?
-
And yet the rest of the body is rarely considered when looking at mainstream shoulder rehab.
-
Filling this knowledge gap is so needed!
-
Practitioners don’t learn this stuff unless they go digging and Joanne’s got the spade & can point you to the hole!
-
This workshop was juicy & there’s so much more I could mention but I’m getting RSI & you probably have to go somewhere.
-
But I’ll say this. If you are either:
-
1) Struggling with a reoccurring shoulder injury that you just can’t kick or
-
2) A practitioner that wants to level up their shoulder rehab.
-
I highly recommend reading one of her two books, Sport Stability & Movement Performance or The Power & The Grace.
-
Or better yet book a JEMS course.
-
Take a deeper look at why your shoulder rehab isn’t sticking & travel beyond the mainstream.

We had Troy & Chris in from yesterday to learn about their business.
-
To be honest, initially I was like, meh, I like barefoot shoes, thick soles are the devil!
-
But I was super impressed. These guys are passionate about running & footwear that helps bring the most enjoyment out of your running, (or walking) whatever style you might prefer.
-
Even more than that was their devotion to their customers. They offer appointments for people to book at no extra charge so they can be assessed, fitted and educated about the best footwear for them. (50% of people are wearing the wrong sized sneaker!)
-
They’ll film customers in their old footwear & then compare it to them in the new footwear.
-
They’re happy to spend quite a bit of time with each customer.
-
They’ll make sure they over supply employees so customers never have to wait for service.
-
AND they’re keen to work with us so that we can provide injury detail on any Leopard client that visits them so that they get the most appropriate shoe for their body.
-
Now that’s a shoe business lifting the bar!

We did some migraine & prone (face down) neck treatment training today with the very fun & .norris.

The training came out of 2 great questions.
-
? “What else can I use other than my thumbs during neck treatments?” &
-
? “What’s the best way to treat a migraine client without flaring them up?”.
-
Here are my top 6 tips.
-
1. Start the client prone & use your palm or forearm over the upper & mid traps.
-
It’s a nice way to start a session & can get you an easy win by releasing tension in the neck without directly touching it.
-
2. Keep it slow, broad & strong.
-
Good flow shows you’re in control & helps down regulate the nervous system. Too many pokey-stop-start strokes can kick start a headache or migraine.
-
3. Once in the neck sink in to the tissue & wait to find an opening.
-
Don’t push & never force.
-
4. Reassure the client during a challenging stroke, it’ll help them relax.
-
5. Explain why you’re doing what you’re doing.
-
When the client has context & is involved in their treatment, what you do will be far more effective.
-
6. Make it feel nice.
-
I’m a big fan of strokes that are both therapeutic AND feel really good.
-
It doesn’t have to be one or the other. It doesn’t cost you anything. It doesn’t take any extra time.
-
And it’s a really good way to build a loyal client list who love coming to see you.
-
That’s it!
