Did you know that around 50 Australians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease every day, which is approximately one person every three‑quarters of an hour? Parkinson’s is the fastest‑growing neurological condition in Australia, affecting people of all ages with a wide variety of symptoms.

April 11 each year is World Parkinson’s Day, a day recognised globally to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects movement, muscle control and other functions.

The day commemorates the birthday of Dr James Parkinson, the British physician who first described the condition in his 1817 essay 'An Essay on the Shaking Palsy'. His work laid the foundation for later research and understanding of the disease.

Parkinson’s often begins gradually, with symptoms initially affecting one side of the body before progressing to both. It can lead to a range of motor and non‑motor symptoms that vary between individuals. Raising awareness supports people living with Parkinson’s, their families and researchers working toward better treatments and care.
