👩‍⚕️✨ Meet the Team ✨👨‍⚕️

We’re excited to introduce our brand new Meet the Team series!

Over the coming months, we’ll be shining a spotlight on the incredible people behind our clinic - the friendly faces who are here to support you every step of the way.

First up, we’re proud to introduce one of our wonderful doctors, Dr Shavaksha.

Dr Shavaksha is a valued member of our team and has been at SCHOC since 2013, bringing a wealth of knowledge, dedication, and genuine care to every patient interaction. With a passion for providing personalised, high-quality care, Dr Shavaksha is committed to supporting patients through every stage of their journey.

💬 Lets dive into a Q and A with Dr Sorab Shavaksha.

🔵What is your specialty?

Haematology.

🔵How long have you been working in this field?

I finished my advanced training in 2012, but first worked in Haematology in the UK back in 2004.

🔵What led you to choose haematology?

I love the mix of science and humanity.

🔵What do you find most rewarding about your work?

Going home at night, feeling that I've genuinely made a difference to someone's life.

🔵What do you wish patients understood about their treatment?

That I've considered multiple different types of treatment for each patient and arrived at the one I think is going to work best for them at this time.

🔵How do you support patients when things feel overwhelming?

I try to imagine myself in their position for just one minute and then, most importantly, just listen. Sometimes a hug works better than any medication!

🔵What is one common myth about cancer you’d like to clear up?

That sugar feeds cancer. It doesn't.

🔵What’s something important patients should know about their diagnosis or treatment?

A whole team of people are behind you all the way: from phlebotomists collecting your blood, lab scientists analysing your pathology samples, radiologists looking at your latest scans, the admin team booking you in for visits, nurses smiling and giving you your treatment, to the catering ladies preparing another yummy morning tea, as well as your doctor who has spent several hours and a few sleepless nights on a background of years of training and education to come up with the best management plan possible to get you better.

🔵What advances in treatment are you most excited about?

The bispecific era: drugs that attach to tumour cells and T-cells simultaneously, which activate the patient's own immune system to destroy cancer cells.

🔵What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Running, indoor rowing, reading, playing my Telecaster and learning the capital cities of the world.

🔵Favourite way to relax?

Exercising vigorously!

🔵Favourite holiday destination?

Cabarita Beach is a new favourite, but anywhere that makes my family happy is a favourite for me.

🔵What’s one thing that always makes you smile at work?

The joke board in the foyer! The Mrs Turtle one still gets me every time!

🔵Are you team coffee or tea?

Coffee!

🔵What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?

Parkrun with the kids, some reading in my hammock, and finish with a good pizza at a restaurant with several rapid-fire wines.

We’re so grateful to have Dr Shavaksha as part of our team 💙

✨Stay tuned as we introduce more of the amazing people who make our clinic what it is!
