Sometimes the only way to make a decision is by your instinct…when both options explored may have different risks attached. Shared with consent…this Mumma wrestled with recommendations for a cesarean following a 4th degree tear, but followed her heart with a second homebirth, her second VBAC. No stitches required and a recovery so simple it was hard to comprehend! I’m so happy for this family that they experienced a birth like no other. Just magic to witness…honoured to have supported this to happen alongside great collaborative obstetric consultation 💕💕💕this is what we wish for all women…fully informed consent. Stand with women as they choose what feels right for them…simple.

Such a restful place…lovely birthing memories made close by last week! Reflecting on that birth I felt so full of positivity for the insane power of women. Another reflection involved the strength of a partner who was ‘all-in’. Side by side at all antenatal visits…instinctively picking up cues (those obvious and those not so!) and so present with the process of birth and the aftermath…what a difference this makes to a woman…blessed to be a small part of this family journey🧡

Happy New Year to everyone! Here is our sweet little Vallie who was the last baby born in 2024💕Rachael laboured for two days with contractions every 5 or so minutes…these then settled…only to come with strength the following night! The older kids played in the pool for 15 minutes before it was time to let Mum do her thing…labour established and little Vallie was born in under 35 minutes! We discovered a very short cord that looped around her body (hence why nature was gently moving Vallie into position). Congratulations to my son, Tom, who supports his family in so many ways; and to Rachael for your trust in birth and birth at home. You made it look easy! Vallie is surrounded by her November birth flower, chrysanthemums…lighting is enhanced by placing a small battery powered set under the liner! Homebirth with Helen is taking clients in 2025 from July. Limited places available.

….and this is the result at 42+4 days when Mumma is patient and has naturally long gestations…Mel employed me at 42 weeks of pregnancy as the public system would not support a birth at home beyond 42 weeks. Yes, the rate of stillbirth increases three fold…but in actual numbers over 99% of babies will still be okay! It is up to the family to decide what is right for them and weigh up these factors for themselves once the information has been gathered. The placenta had a velamentous cord insertion, hence a physiologic birth of the placenta was the safest option. This birth will be remembered for all the right reasons. Supporting women’s choices, and witnessing the power and love that surrounds those who seek an intuitive pathway to bring their babies earth side; this one on a very special date indeed. Almost can’t believe it but very very glad for those who spent their time writing letters and signing petitions!

Today, one of the biggest (and fastest) wins we could have possibly imagined has happened for homebirth families and midwives.

This major milestone simply wouldn’t have been possible without the fierce dedication and advocacy of mothers, midwives, and supporters of homebirth! 💪❤️ 6,000 women filled out surveys, more than 1200 sent emails to their local member of parliament and many of you met with your MPs.

Less than five months ago we came together to stop the Government from putting restrictions on where women choose to birth by excluding women. Unfolding before our eyes we saw a pathway where only ‘low-risk’ women would be able to birth at home with an endorsed midwife.
Today, the government has announced a completely new approach to how midwives will be insured when they support a woman during birth.

They have abandoned the "low-risk" definitions to a framework that truly respects midwives' clinical judgment. Now, intrapartum homebirth services will be covered as long as they comply with the NMBA’s Safety and Quality Guidelines (SQG) – a huge win for safe, accessible, and empowered birthing options! 🌈🏠

Whilst we pinch ourselves, we know the work is not finished and that as always, we still need to be watchful to protect women’s birth choices.

This huge win reflects the power of our collective voices, highlighting how people power can shift the course of policy and make real change for families and providers. 🗣️💬 We spoke and the Government listened - this is truly woman-centered care in action.

I have been listening to the wisdom of Dr Stu for years. A Home birth Obstetrician specialising in breech and twins. His common sense approach to birth is one I admire greatly…I have learnt so much these past two days as he shared his wisdom with us in Sydney and I now have much more confidence in variations of normal birth. Looking forward to the Convergence of Rebellious Midwives conference this weekend! Thanks Mel and Dr Stu🙏🙏
