In 2013 a significant amount of horse meat was found in some beef products which were on sale to the general public within the EU and in the UK . The UK Government commissioned an independent review into the food supply network and in 2014, HM Government Elliott Review into the Integrity and Assurance of Food Supply Networks was published. This report included recommendations for improving systems to deter, identify and prosecute food adulteration, as well as recommendations on improving laboratory testing capability to ensure a harmonized approach for food authenticity testing.

A previous publication described the application of a real-time PCR method for the relative quantitation of horse in raw meat samples. This current paper describes the development of additional real-time PCR methods, for the relative quantitation of pork DNA in raw/processed food products, and horse DNA in processed food products, as a result of a further Defra project.
