How amazing is calendula!! The best part is we can use it exactly the same for our furr babies! ๐Ÿด๐ŸŒฟ A great remedy to have in your first aid kit.

A little video of how I give horses homeopathic remedies. Super simple, super easy.

As you can see in this video, Digger is wanting/needing this remedy. This is not trained! When he doesn't want the remedy anymore he lets me know. His way of telling me "no" is to walk away when I ask if he wants the remedy or he turns his head away and definitely won't be so compliable with opening his mouth for me ๐Ÿ˜†

Note: Listen to the horse don't force it. Horses know when they need it and when they don't.

Horses are pretty switched on when it comes to healing their bodies. They know what it needs. It's up to us to learn how to listen to what they are telling us.

I am currently working with a horse who is ill and doesn't have a huge appetite for a hard feed but much prefers to just eat the grass and hay. Now, our first response is normally, "if he won't eat it, we'll find a way to make him eat it". Adding more enticing ingredients to the feed such as molasses or sweet treats, isn't going to support what his body's system is trying to tell you. It's only sending that body into overdrive in order to try and digest it all. Sugar only makes things more complicated and I would try and avoid it at all costs! "It's just a little. It won't do anything," but I say, "a little every day adds up" and it's the adding up that counts. Let's not make more work but simplify things.

Slow down. Watch. Observe. Learn. Then act.

The hard feed I made was with clean ingredients and supportive herbs (same as what my horse Digger eats and loves) but this horse is telling me something isn't right in his body to eat this right now. His body is giving me clues as to where I need to look to truly help him.

Horses need fibre to survive. Their digestive system is made to digest and ferment fibre for energy and life.
If your horse is underweight - fibre
Dealing with ulcers - fibre
Stressed - fibre
Overweight - fibre

No fibre = no horse.

So, this horse that just wants the grass and hay makes me pretty happy, but the moment he stops eating altogether that's when we should worry. Another note, when your horse is fighting illnesses keep their protein and fat levels low. Cut out lucerne as it puts more work on the liver to produce bile to be able to digest that protein and fat. Their body needs rest from over work from digesting complex foods inorder for the body to focus on fighting their battle.

It's that time of the month again ๐Ÿชฑ๐ŸŒ• as it leads to the full-moon phase. It's the time to start your homeopathic treatment for deworming. I like to use the homeopathic remedy Cina 3c one dose a day, 4 days prior to fullmoon and a couple days after full moon. Can be repeated monthly.

OR

You can buy this homeopathic worm formula from Natural pet https://www.naturalpet.co.nz/product/worms-internal-parasites-horses-homeopathic.html

Homeopathic remedies for deworming DO NOT kill worms and parasites. Rather, they CHANGE the environment within the body so the worms and parasites can no longer thrive in it. Therefore, they leave the body.

The herb of the week is Chamomile

If your horse suffers from colic or just had a colic episode chamomile is a good herb to think about as it soothes the digestive system and helps calm the nervous system. Horses that are the type to struggle with stressful situations might benefit from this herb.

This herb can be used as an infusion, tea, or fed as the dried herb straight into the feed bucket.

NOTE: Should only be fed less than 3 months of continuous use at a time. It has a strong action on the liver, which will need to be given a break to avoid a toxic reaction. Some horses are allergic to the pollen on the flowers so using an infusion or tea may be the better option in those cases.

Sedative - reducing nervous tension or excitement; sedating.
Carminative - eases flatulence and colic in the gut.
Anti-inflammatory - reduces inflammation in the body
Vasodilatory - an agent that causes widening of the blood vessels.
Analgesic - pain relieving.
Anti-spasmodic - reducing spasm or tension particularly in areas of smooth muscle, such as gut walls, bronchial tubes, ect.

The homeopathic remedy echinacea.

This remedy can be taken either internally or used externally. When finding a homeopathic remedy for your horse, try and match the symptoms as closely as you can. Horses also know what remedy they need. Try offer the remedy in front of them and see what they do. Subtle signs they show you that they need that remedy would be, hovering over remedy with their nose, breathing over remedy, licking hand or the bottle. In most cases if they don't want it they will sniff it and then turn away from it.

I use that method of finding a remedy for my horse all the time. It's also easier to ask them when they are in a calm state. No point trying to ask them when they are stressed or not relaxed because their focus will be elsewhere. Be patient with them and they'll help you help them.

This week's herb is Echinacea

The herb echinacea is super handy to have on you at all times. It's a great "pick me up" after your horse has been fighting any sort of infection or illness. It can be fed as an infusion or dried herb straight into their feed bucket.

A little secret in trying to pick a herb for your horse...offer it to them before adding it into their feed. Watch and see. Do they want it?

One incident, I offered my horse chamomile thinking he needed it, but he sniffed it and turned his nose from it. Ok, he doesn't want/need it. Then a couple months ago I offered it to him again and he sniffed and this time he started eating it out of my hand. This was a sign he wanted it, or should I say, he needed it. Horses know what their bodies need, listen carefully and they'll show you what they need.

Anti-viral - something that is effective against viral infections.
Anti-bacterial - helps the body resist or destroy pathogenic micro-organisms.
Immuno-suppressant - supports and stimulates the bodyโ€™s immune system.
Anti-inflammatory - reduces inflammation in the body.
Vulnerary - used to heal wounds.

A whole years difference. November 2023 vs November 2024.

It's been a struggle to keep weight on Digger, but this year has definitely been a huge mile stone for us with Digger's health journey. Trusting the process pays off in the end.
Patience is not my forte and it has been a huge struggle for myself. Since having Digger in my life it's forced my to have more patience. Not being patient has it's challenges, because it causes my mind to doubt everything we do because nothing is working as fast as my thoughts. I have to stop and remind myself. True healing, takes time, and that is why it has been such a long journey for us. And, that's ok. I can't say I have mastered the art of patience just yet haha but with each passing day, I get a day better than I was yesterday.
2024 has been a huge sigh of relief for me with Digger. Ending the year with happy tears with how much improvement we've had. 2025 starts with excitement as I start the journey of gentling Digger in. We will take our time and I'll go at the pace Digger needs to go. His health is my top priority.

A healthy horse is a happy horse๐Ÿด
